Hey everybody! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to give you an inside look into how I prepare for judging the Las Vegas Open.
If you haven’t read Salty John’s article about the Las Vegas Open judges, and why haven’t you, then you know Danny and I are to 2 longest serving judges at the Las Vegas Open. Many times we are asked how we prepare to judge such a large event, that gets larger every year, and so this week I will give you a little inside peak as to what I do to prepare for the largest event in the world.
Rules Discussions with Strangers
As much as I love my wife, it can be tedious arguing with her all of the time. it gets really bad when we argue about 40K rules as she has no idea what I am talking about and questioning why I am arguing about little army guys. As a result I have to take my practice discussions outside of the home. I start to discuss various rules interactions and issues with random people that I happen to meet. For the most part people just look at me weird and ask if I am actually talking to them. I have yet to find someone that knows what I am talking about and will actually engage me in a rules discussion. Even so, my training continues, to the bewilderment of the people.
Randomly Carding People
In addition to talking to random people about the various rule interactions of competitive 40K i also go around yellow and red carded people as practice for the actual event. many times it is the same people I am talking to but I also card people that I never spoke. The reactions I usually get are similar to the reactions I would get at the actual tournament so it makes for good practice in dealing with that. it is especially helpful around the holidays as i card my family members and ask them to leave my house. It certainly makes for a memorable time if not a happy one.
Walking
If you have ever been to a large tournament, or a tournament in a large venue, then you will most likely see the judges walking around the hall all day. As well as being a healthy activity, it helps me prepare my legs for the large amount of walking that takes place during the event. I know that when I judged SoCal Open my legs were killing me because two of the events I was running were on opposite sides of the hall. This will hopefully get my legs ready and my cardio ready for the event. Although after climbing 29 flights of stairs at the New Orleans Open I think my cardio is good now, thank you. Okay lets be real, I am just going to have Danny and john walk around instead of me any way.
That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know what you think, and how you prepare for the Las Vegas Open, in the comments section below. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook, Twitch, and Patreon pages to stay up to date on what we’re up to and when episodes drop!
