Hello All,
Now that we’ve been able to recap the previous year I would like to take a minute to try and predict events for the coming year. These predictions will be bold (easy ones are no fun). When I revisit this article next December, I will see which ones turned out to be true.
- Either the Tau or Craftworld Eldar book will break the meta….but… the issue will be rectified by the end of the summer
You heard it here first folks, Tau and Eldar are OP please nerf. All joking aside, the rumors for both of these books indicate some return to the Jump-Shoot-Jump abilities of the old days. I think this will be a tricky ability to balance and with the increased costing of indirect fire, and the increase in terrain could make for some hard adjustments to the meta. At the same time, these fan bases are hungering for a new release as it’s been a few years since they were widely relevant. Another matter in favor of these armies breaking the meta is the wide array of units available especially all the Forgeowrld Options. I think the new books will be a breath of fresh air and even though I think one or both will upturn the meta I think GW will continue the recent trend of acting quickly to resolve the issue. Editor’s note: This prediction was made before the railgun preview so this isn’t a knee-jerk reaction fyi.
2. We will get model previews for the Old World Fantasy games and Adeptus Titanicus will begin to turn into a new Version of Epic
The first of these is a little gutsy as I feel the Old World won’t be released until late 2023, at the earliest, but I am going with my gut on this one. Especially if Total War: Warhammer 3 is a huge success (I know I have my copy per-ordered). I have been playing some 6th ed Warhammer Fantasy so it could also be wishful thinking. I’m not going to commit to saying these will be completed model previews, I think they could be more concept art, but I feel like the rumors will continue to be more and more concrete. I also think Titanicus will eventually move into become a new version of Epic. With the addition of the Aeronautica game more and more minis are coming out that fit the scale. While I have yet to play either Titanicus or Aernoautica I think there is a lot of interest in creating battles that fit the scale of the fluff.
3. The new Horus Heresy release will be a half-way step between 7th and 8th but will be closer to 8th then 7th
There has been a lot of chatter about the new Horus Heresy series, but curiously we haven’t seen any actual previews yet. The rumors hinted that the sets were supposed to be released around Christmas but all we got were two special characters. At the same time, if we factor in the production delays (especially given the delays to the Genestealer Cults and Chapter Approved 2022) it’s not totally surprising. I think the Horus Heresy game will also struggle a bit on release, unless the rules are really tight. Previously the HH series benefited from players burnt out on 7th edition but the mood has been more positive in 8th and 9th. Will the new season system and Tau releases shift things again? I am curious how GW will slot and support this game as a large number of the models are split between Forgeworld and the traditional site.
4. The following 40k Armies will get new books in 2022: Genestealer Cults, Custodes, Tau, Aeldari, Chaos, World Eaters/Khorne or Emperor’s Children/Slaanesh, Chaos Daemons and Imperial Knights.
Some of these are gimmie’s given what we know already and some are my own guesses. I think it may be optimistic for both a Chaos Daemon and Chaos Space Marine list but I could see it given the number of models they share. I also think that we are due for a chaos space marine supplement that will be similar to the loyalist cousins. Given that there are books for the Death Guard and the Thousand Sons already that leaves Slaanesh and Khorne as the left overs. I think we will get a daemons primarch and have heard rumors for everything from Angron to Fulgrim to Lorgar (I doubt that we will see Lorgar unless they finally bring back the fluff for people to become daemon princes of chaos undivided, which honestly Lorgar should be).
Conclusion:
I hope you enjoyed my predictions. I can’t say how confident I am for each of these predictions I think some are much more likely. I think it will be a great year for non-40k properties (I am still drooling over both the Horus Heresy update and any scrap of rules for the Old World). I think Games Workshop has more potential for greatness with each year. I think the narrative setting for bot Age of Sigmar and 40k are beginning to be realized and I am pumped for the new releases.
