GW Grognard: Non Painted Models Don’t Count

Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to tell you what the real value of your collection is.

Everyone that plays a Games Workshop game, or any miniatures game really, loves collecting the models. Many times players want at least one model of each unit in their army. For example, I happen to have every ship for the Separatist Fleet in Star Wars Armada. Now the faction only consists of 4 ships, but hey it is currently the entire line and doesn’t look like they are getting anymore units anytime soon. One thing many people like to show off is their collections of 40K models and many collector’s do have a lot of models. However, do you really have a proper collection? Here are a couple reasons as to why your collection is not a real collection.

Boxes

I have seen collections that included models still in their boxes. I don’t know why people want to show these off as there is nothing to see. Unless you want to show off your collection of boxes and there is nothing inside. in fact, when people show off their collection and include boxes “that they haven’t built yet” I just assume that the boxes are empty. I mean I still have boxes from maybe 10 years ago that I still haven’t opened but I wouldn’t show off my procrastination by showing the boxes as part of my army. Now that I think about it, I really should get those models built and painted. I am sure right when I do that there will be a newer version that I will also buy and not build or paint for another 10 years.

Non Painted Models

As someone who hates painting, I don’t know why this is an issue for me. When I see people show off their collection I take a look, like anyone should, but is immediately put off when I see a horde of unpainted models. Doesn’t matter what the army is, or even how big the army is, if there are unpainted models in the army, especially a large number of them, then it really takes away from the scope of the collection. I guess since I don’t like painting, I find that having a large painted collection is more impressive because of the effort that goes into getting all that done. This is also the main reason why I never show off my collection. I have a lot of stuff that has been built, mainly because I don’t like them sitting in boxes, but it still needs to be painted. I’m talking like 20 years worth of stuff still in grey plastic.

The Real Collection

So I guess, for me, using the two criteria I just mentioned a person’s real collection is what they have built and painted. This doesn’t bode well for me. even though I have been miniature wargaming for over thirty years, I really don’t have much to show for it. I did sell off a bunch of armies in the mid 2000’s but since then I really don’t have a big painted collection. I guess I should get on that. I have the time but with so much other stuff to do, like judge events, getting armies ready for tournaments, work and other miscellaneous things getting in the way, it is tough to accomplish. I can honestly say it is not my laziness. Definitely not the fact that I normally play video games instead of building and painting models when i do have the time. Nope it is not that at all. See you on HALO Infinite.
