Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to tell you the secret to learning how to play 40K.
I play a lot of games besides 40K. I don’t just play Games Workshop games either. As many longtime readers may know, I play some other fantasy/scifi games but also a lot of historical games. One thing that I always have a hard time doing is reading and understanding the rules to any new game I am trying to learn. I learn more by actually playing the game instead of just reading the rules. In fact, I don’t even read the rules nowadays I just play learn the rules on the fly. It’s why i am such a good judge. Here are a few reasons why learning a game my way is the best way.
Someone Else Reads the Rules
Like I mentioned earlier, I usually find it tedious to read a new ruleset. By just playing the game your opponent has usually read the rules so they already know it. They can help you along with any corrections or advice with the game. This is especially true if you are trying a game out at a convention. People running events there are dying to get you to play their game so they are more than willing to help you learn how to play. Luckily they have the patience to take your through your first game and you didn’t have to read a thing. So always be on the look out for people running demo games at conventions or even your local store so that you can learn the game without reading the rules yourself.
Plenty of Time to Do Other Stuff
Not bothering to read the rules gives you plenty of time to do other things. One thing you can be doing besides reading rules is to get your army ready for the new game you are about to play. When you are getting into a new game you need an army to play with and those models are not going to build and paint themselves. I mean if you didn’t have an army ready to play then there is no game at all to play and thus no opportunity to learn the rules. So as you can see, you really can’t read the rules until you have an army ready and you need as much of that precious hobby time devoted to building your army that you can’t afford to waste that time by reading the rules for the game. Priorities people!
You Can Make it Up as You Go Along
One of the best parts about not reading the rules is that you can just make it up as you go along. Since you don’t know what the correct way to play is, you can just do random things and hope you get it right. It is taking the button smashing strategy from arcade fighting games and applying it to the game you are learning. Sure your opponent will correct you and such but that is part of his job in teaching you how to play the game correctly. Just because he is helping you out by teaching you this new game doesn’t mean you should make it easy for him. So next time you are learning a new game just start doing whatever you want. I am sure it will make you a better player and your opponent a better teacher.
