GW Grognard: What I don’t miss when running tournaments

Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to talk about 40K and maybe some 40K adjacent stuff

I have played a lot of games of 40K over the years. I have not won a lot of games over the years but I have played a lot. I have also run a lot of games and tournaments these past 20+ years. Not necessarily for 40K or Games Workshop games either. There is a different set of issues when you are running an event as opposed when you are playing in an event. Sometimes I am glad that I am playing in an event and sometimes I am glad I am running or judging the event instead of playing. This week here are a few things that I do not miss or worry about when I am running or judging events.

My List

Long time readers may know, or should know, that I play Chaos as my main army, usually Chaos Space Marines. I do have other armies but i am always drawn back to the dark gods. When I am running an event I never have to worry about the list I am taking since I am not playing. I don’t have to agonize about what optimal units to take or how to adjust my army because I am 2 points over the limit. It is a bit freeing not having to worry about it or, better yet, I can try new stuff out if I have to play as the ringer since my games don’t count anyway.

Stress (from the actual games)

Let’s face it, sometimes the games themselves can be somewhat stressful. This can be especially true as you keep on winning and move further up the standings. There have been plenty of instances where a player cheated, even on stream, because of the stress of trying to win the tournament. Sure, there is the stress of getting the event up and running but many times that stress is gone once the vent starts with maybe a few moments of stress as the tournament progresses. I would easily take the less amount of stress, once the tournament starts, of running an event over playing the game and actually winning. This could also be why I am bad st the game as a whole but I think I have enough stress in my life right now.

This is how I assume my painting looks like to others

Painting

This one is a no brainer. I dislike painting in general and having to run events instead of playing lets me not have to worry about getting my army and display board ready for a tournament. Who hasn’t stayed up all night right before a tournament in order to get the army to the minimum so that it can be allowed to play? I spoke about stress from playing the game, well here is where it really starts as you frantically try to finish your army and hopefully get a few hours sleep before game time. I am glad that I don’t have to worry about having a painted army. Now there is the stress of getting the event location ready for the tournament the day before but I am not here to talk about that.
