GW Grognard: You can’t have it both ways

Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to talk about trying to have your cake and eat it too.

We are seeing more and more events coming up as the year winds down. Many stores are getting into running events again and that’s good as it gets more players involved in the hobby and the tournament scene. I know that employees, store owners and organizers are excited to play also but this is a problem. When these people participate, and place well, it can cause some animosity as people see it as the store saving money by not having to give out prize support, maybe making sure to eliminate certain players so they don’t have a chance to win a prize, or that the event was rigged in some way because employees/organizers were playing. All are valid points and I know it has actually happened before. So this week I’ll help the organizers out and suggest some ways to still get your tournament fix and still run an excellent event.

Have someone else run it

This might be the easiest solution. Just get someone not associated with the store in any way run the event. In addition, have the event at a location that is also not associated with the store. This way you completely separate yourself from the event and you can really go to town and try your best without the worry that people may accuse you of any shenanigans. This sounds like me telling you to just go somewhere else to play and that is because that is exactly what I am telling you, just with extra steps.

Employees Only Tournament

This format should really be fun. Just have a tournament where only your employees can play. This novelty tournament can garner a lot of attention and really showcase the talents of your employees and yourself. Imagine the great prizes you could offer. Winner could get a pay raise, exemption from having to clean the bathrooms for a set amount of time, or even an actual break from working. The possibilities are endless and I only see an upside to this. The real restriction may be the fact that you may not have enough employees that play 40K to have a tournament but I am sure you could hire a few people to “work” for the store a week or two leading up to the event. That’s perfectly ok.

Play as the Ringer

This role might be the most important. The ringer’s job is to provide a game for that guy that has the bye if there are an odd number of players. You can try to win the game as the result doesn’t matter since they will get the win anyway. This allows you to play to your heart’s content, not have to worry about your performance, and be that cool guy that is getting someone a game. Sure, you’re not going to win the tournament or any prizes but the enjoyment you bring to the other players at your event should really be what you are striving for and hopefully you are able to do that.

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know what you think, and if you thinkn organizers should be able to play in their own events, in the comments section below.
