Hey Everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to once again talk about editions past, whether you want to or not.
I was really excited about my article I had planned this week. I was going to talk about all the new things you could do with orks and even maybe discuss some of the stuff coming out in future releases. Then I remembered that everyone will be watching and talking about Lone Star Open, so now my excitement for the article is gone. I’m sure there are plenty of places and writers that could give you a good look at the codex, so in the meantime why don’t we look at some units from the past that are no longer with us. What? You don’t want to look at that stuff? Well too bad, you’re stuck on this roller coaster of emotion, for me anyway.
Imperial Guard Jump Troops
Once upon a time, the Imperial Guard had access to almost all of the same stuff as Space Marines. Rhinos, Land Raiders, and even Land Speeders were all available to the humble guardsman. I even had a unit of assault troops with jump packs in my Imperial Guard army. Sure they weren’t as good as the Space Marines but they were still cool, at least in my adolescent mind. The best part was that the actual jump pack, at least according to the art at the time, was just the Space Marine backpack. I had plenty of those so it was easy to make an assault squad with jump packs. Alas, much like the rest of the army, they have since been lost to the mists of time, and my mom cleaning house without me there.
Space Marine Field Police
Now this particular unit was never really a thing I just thought it was neat and wish it was more fleshed out. I assumed Games Workshop just rolled it into the Chaplain’s duties but there are some hints in the fluff. In a couple of the Horus Heresy Forgeworld books there is mention of discipline units and units whose job is to keep an eye on their brethren. They even use symbols are are very close to the one that was used for the field police. I like that there is this nod to the Rogue Trader era stuff and who knows, maybe we’ll see this type of units once the Horus Heresy gets going again.
Kroot Army
Ever want an army of all killer chickens? At one point you could have an army that was all Kroot models. They even had different entries for all the types of troops and it really was a fully fleshed out army. It was also a good army to play. It wasn’t overpowering but at the same time it wasn’t a pushover either. It allowed a player the be really creative with the army since they had no official models, so you had to convert almost every unit in the army. I would hope that Games Workshop would bring this army back as I think a lot of people would enjoy it.
That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know what you think, and units no longer with us or never made do you miss, in the comments section below. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook, Twitch, and Patreon pages to stay up to date on what we’re up to and when episodes drop!
