Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to talk about whatever I like, and I like a lot of things.
In case you haven’t heard, I have been playing 40K for a long time. I’m pretty sure I have models that are older than a lot of you. I’m talking mid to late eighties. Now I’m not here to talk about how young I am but to talk about something not 40K related. In case you haven’t noticed, I actually play a lot of other games outside of those produced by Games Workshop. I actually play a lot of historicals and the occasional fantasy and other sci fi type games. Now, the models for those games are definitely not up to the same standard as Games Workshop, but there are a few reason I enjoy working on them.
Easier to put together (sometimes)
Just look at the picture up above. Look at how many pieces are on that sprue. Just a cursory glance will also show you how those pieces go together. A lot of times, but not always, the parts go together really easy. It makes army construction quick and easy. Sure their may not be much variation, depending on the manufacturer, but there are times that I don’t know what to do with the 50+ pieces that come with a Games Workshop sprue just to build 4 guys. Sometimes its nice to build a nice simple kit.
Painting is Easy
As I have always said, I am not a fan of painting the models. As much as I love how beautiful their models are, they have so much detail it seems like a daunting task for someone like me who has vision issues. The beauty of a lot of historical models is that they are not as intricate to paint. The picture above is a painted T-34. You can see how simple the paint scheme is. Things like this is what makes it easy for me to paint those types of models. That’s not to say that there are no historical models with intricate paint schemes. One of the reasons Napoleonics is popular is due to the colorful armies. Same with samurai armies. Many people paint camo on their modern armies also. You can have as simple or as intricate a color scheme as you want, and that’s why I actually enjoy painting these models.
A Question of Scale
Games Workshop’s 2 main games are a large scale, especially when compared to other game systems. I also enjoy Adeptus Titanicus but not as much as the original since infantry and tanks are not involved. Something about playing a smaller scale and seeing a real grand tactical scene, or a real 40K Apocalypse game, give me a sense of wonder. Right now, being a bit older, I have settled on 15mm as being my ideal scale for large battles. It’s that’s nice middle ground of still being a grand scale with the cost of the equivalent army at a larger scale. I really hope they bring infantry and vehicles into the Adeotus Titanicus game.
That doesn’t mean I plan on leaving 40K anytime soon. Luckily I am able to find the time to enjoy both and will continue to do so as long as I can.
