GW Grognard: What Happened to Them?

Hey Everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to help you appreciate the world of 40K

There are a lot of products just in the 40K line alone. I can’t imagine having the job of keeping track of all of it. You could easily just go to Games Workshop’s website but it is still a lot to take in. In all these units there are some that you may not have seen in a long time, or even seen on the tabletop at all. This is especially true of models that were seen in almost every army but now we barely remember at all. Here are a few units that I either remember being used all the time or have yet to see them on the tabletop at all.

Mutalith Vortex Beast

I still can’t believe that this is an actual unit that is available to the Thousand Sons. At first glance it seems good. I meant it has 14 wounds and is S7 and T7. The vortex power seems ok but nothing to write home about. However it is a big, ugly model and is slow moving. It is difficult to hide the model so unless you are leaning hard into making these things useful, they don’t last very long on the battlefield. I think I saw one once but I can’t remember. Hopefully when Thousand Sons get a new codex, they will be better.

Wraith Lords

Remember these guys? If you played 40K before 6th edition, then you remember how good this unit used to be. The introduction of the Wraithknight really killed any usefulness of the Wraithlord. I mean how can you even be a lord if your knight is better than you in almost every way, except being able to hide of course. The days of being fearful of the army that had two or three of these are long gone. Nowadays this unit sits on a shelf collecting dust instead of the heads of their enemies in the modern tournament scene. Who knows if we will see their kind again.

Tyrant Guard

If you have only been playing 40K in recent years, I wouldn’t be surprised if you have never heard of or seen this unit. These were one of the first bodyguard type units in the game. I remember in 3rd edition these guys were annoying as hell when I was trying to kill Tyranid HQ units. The model has changed a bit since those early days, but it hardly matters as I have not seen this unit in play in a long time. I mean I’m not really sure if the current model is an improvement over the original. It would be nice if they can get some updated rules so people may actually use them in game. On second thought maybe not as the Tyranid HQ units are hard enough to kill on their own.

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know what you think, and what units you miss, in the comments section below. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook, Twitch, and Patreon pages to stay up to date on what we’re up to and when episodes drop!
