If you have been following the news you know that somewhere, deep in the citadel that is Games Workshop, there appears to be a return to the world that was in Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Games Workshop has been showing some teasers for the game over the last couple of years but nothing consistent on terms of updates that have been released. This got me, and probably other people, thinking about what may be the scale of the models.
28mm Heroic Scale
The obvious choice would be to keep it at the same scale as it was before. This sounds like a good idea, especially because anyone that has kept their Warhammer might be able to use their models right away. I mean there are people out there still selling and looking for models at this scale. The downside of this may be that since people already have models, there may not be anyone buying these newer versions. This actually would bring us back to the same problem we had when the Old World was destroyed, no one was buying new models. This also could compete with Age of Sigmar models as they would be roughly the same scale.
10mm Warmaster Scale
Back in the day I played every specialist game and this included Warmaster. The funny thing about Warmaster is that a lot of the same mechanics can be seen in Warlord Games’ products because they were both developed by the same designer, Rick Priestly. At first, I was a bit put off by the scale because it was smaller than the regular game but bigger than epic 40K. In the end I actually enjoyed it as they weren’t as detailed so were quicker to paint, for me anyway. Going to this scale would make the game unique and seperate it further from Age of Sigmar. It would also make players have to buy all new models, as their are not as many Warmaster models out their. I actually wouldn’t mind this scale as they could reintroduce some areas of the world that they expanded on in the original game, like Araby.
6mm Epic Scale
This is actually the scale that I started playing Games Workshop games and is still a soft part in my heart. I can tell you that models at this scale are a bit easier to paint as they are not as detailed as the larger models. The sight of a large army in the scale really does make it look like a grand scale. Prices are usually more affordable for a large army and the larger models are much cheaper than their 28mm scale counterpart. Although it would make people have to buy these new models I’m not sure if it would be viable. I don’t think I can handle painting models so small nowadays for these old eyes, but I still love the scale.
