Ok so I kind of lied. This isn’t about happy thoughts, at least not in general. If you are like me you have an ever growing pile of boxes and sprues. This “pile of shame” has been a constant in tabletop gamers’ lives probably since the inception of the format and it seems like it is never going to slow down. Yes, we make the promise of never buying new models until the old ones are painted but it is hard to resist when a new model or army is released and your local store is giving a good deal on it. Similar to my mom and her 30 year collection of TV Guides, I fully expect my pile to fall on and bury me.* That being said here are a few ways to lighten the load of your “pile of shame”.
Sell Unwanted Models
This seems easy enough, right? Just sell the models that you don’t want. Well the problem is that many times you end up keeping the models because there may be some project down the line that you may need these models. It almost always happens that you sell a model and then actually need the model for a project, so why risk it? I have found that the best way to get it done is to have a friend or family member go through and sell those unwanted models for you. This eliminates the need for you to experience the trauma of parting with your models. Preferably this is done while you are away. Going through a divorce can also have this same effect.**
Re-gifting
Ah, the old custom of taking something that you either bought for yourself, or was given to you as a gift, and re-wrapping it and gifting it to someone else. Although you don’t get a monetary return, you get the return of seeing your fellow gamer’s eyes light up with joy at the sight of a gift you gave them. Hopefully they don’t notice the layer of dust on the gift or that it was sitting on your shelf for the last 5 years. Luckily with the age of a lot of the models, many of them are still considered current sculpts. Happy Birthday! Here is your box of Khorne Berzerkers that are still considered a current sculpt. By the way, I also consider trading in your models to a store in this category as you are practically giving them away.***
Actually Painting Your Models
This is probably the least practical of the three. That is to actually build and paint your models. I know this is a radical idea but hear me out. Building and painting your models has a number of benefits. You get rid of the boxes that the models came in. When you are done, you will have fully painted and based army for the next event you plan on going to, when there are events happening in your area. You also get more money if you sell a well painted army. The most important thing about this, and this really applies to all the suggestions in this article, is that this allows you to buy even more models to add to the pile of shame and then you can start the process all over again.
