GW Grognard: Turn that Frown Upside Down

Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to tell you that everything will be okay in the world of Warhammer 40,000.

Finally we get the new updates rules and point values for the Forgeworld units. I am really excited to see what changes were made for some of my favorite units. Unfortunately, it seems that many units have been relegated to Legends status and will no longer be seen on the battlefields of the 41st millennium. The list is actually pretty long and affects some armies more than others. Here’s a few examples of some of the ones that got cut and, better yet, how you can use those models in your games so you don’t feel so bad.

Venerable Chaplain Dreadnought

One of the darlings of this last Las Vegas Open, the Chaplain dread has been found wanting and placed on the Legends block. Do not despair though, there are plenty of ways to get your proxy/conversion/actual Forgeworld model onto the tabletop. Now they get to be just an ordinary dreadnought, but with wings on the front. They get the regular ballistic skill of 3+ and give out no aura benefits to any nearby units. They even get to be a core unit so they can utilize buffs from your characters. If that isn’t good enough you can use them in your narrative or Crusade games and give them even more skills as you progress in a campaign. Better yet, just play open play and you can still use the Legends stats or make up your own rules and give them whatever overpowered abilities you want.

Renegades & Heretics

I really had high hopes that the army would still be around. Unfortunately, Games Workshop decided to drop the army list, for now. The new plastic traitor guardsmen gives me some hope that something will show up in the future. You can’t have these models just be for Blackstone Fortress. We already have chaos cultist models and even have some cool looking new ones. I can easily see Games Workshop creating a few more units for the army and just repackaging the Astra Militarum vehicles the same way they did for Genestealer Cults. In the mean time, I guess I either have a boat load of chaos cultists or a really weird looking Astra Militarum army.

Death Korp of Krieg

What’s funny is that I was in the process of building a Krieg army when the new edition happened. I decided to wait and see what happens to the army before I actually started building it and I am glad I did. Thanks to the new list there are a fair number of units that I don’t even have to worry about buying anymore. In addition, I now have access to the regular Astra Militarum units without having to use another detachment. Yes, a lot of the units seem to be rolled into the regular codex but I don’t see it as big of an issue since some of the the points cost is actually lower. Yes the loss of things that made the army a special snowflake have been lost but I think the design aesthetic of the army, along with the general “creed” of the army, is what really makes it stand out and I am still excited to field the army. You’ll notice that I did not mention their regimental doctrine and I’ll just leave it at that. When the new guard codex comes out, I hope that they will have better entries and maybe even some type of plastic kit, but we all know what hope leads to…
