GW Grognard: New Obsession and an Old One

Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to talk the talk but not walk the walk because that makes me tired and I’m lazy.

It has been a difficult time for your boy over here. I’m not talking about Covid, the fires in California, or really anything going on in the world. What’s making life difficult for me, right now, is that I am fortunate enough to work from home and this has resulted in me gaining interest in things other than 40K. This also means that I have been buying stuff for these new interests and have been having to explain to the significant other why all these boxes are starting to show up at the house. Now don’t get any ideas into your head about what these interests are because they are still related to gaming. One is the new game, or at least new to me, Conquest, The Last Argument of Kings, and the other is Battletech.

Conquest, The Last Argument of Kings

A relatively new game on the scene, Conquest seems to scratch that fantasy rank and flank game itch that I didn’t know I had. Somewhat of a dark fantasy game I was immediately drawn to the aesthetic of the world as a whole and the unique take on some of the standard races. Other game systems had no appeal to me because they still used the standard fantasy tropes we all know and love. Age of Sigmar doesn’t appeal to me I think because of the round bases and I already play 40K. If you have played almost any game, historical or non historical, that used ranks then you are already somewhat familiar with how the game plays. They do have a reversal in that you need to roll low for the game, which is somewhat refreshing and confusing at first. After a couple of games you easily get the hang of it. They currently have 4 factions, 100 Kingdoms(Similar to Empire), Spire (Whatever the picture above looks like to you), Nord(Norse), and Dweghon(Dwarves). Other races to be revealed are a Greek City State type of army and Orcs riding dinosaurs. I am looking forward to playing once we get back to it.

Battletech

Now we go from the new to the old. Battletech was one of the first non historical wargames that I had ever played. Thanks in a large part to the Robotech series I became fascinated with giant robots and this game just happened to come along at the right time. once I dove into the lore of the game it soon became one of my favorite settings and I followed/played it for years. That is until Wizkids got the rights and ruined the franchise with Mechwarrior:Dark Age (don’t @me). The recent Kickstarter by Catalyst Games reignited my interest in Battletech so, since I am already in because of the kickstarter, I figured I may as well get back into it. I have both the original way the game is played, which can bog down very easily, and the Alpha Strike variant that should speed things up and maybe allow you to bring more than 4 ‘mechs. I can’t wait to jump back in to this great universe again.

I really am in that good of a shape

These 2 games are really just the tip of the iceberg for me. I have a number of other projects in the works but those probably won’t be ready anytime soon. If I were to list everything this would probably become a weekly series on it’s own with no end in sight. No really.

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know what you think, what other projects you are working on, in the comments section below. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook, Twitch, and Patreon pages to stay up to date on what we’re up to and when episodes drop!
