Fantasy Fightclub: Conquest New Players Buying Guide

With Conquest’s community growing quickly, there is a lot to consider when starting out.  Here are a few tips!

So you’re thinking of starting Conquest, the rank-and-flank battle game from Parabellum.  Whether you’re longing for the days of mass battles games, or are new to the genre, you are in for a real treat.

That said, this kind of game can be pretty alien to many of you, so here are a few things to help you make those initial purchases.

Take All Comers is Real:

Unlike many current competitive tabletop systems, skew lists aren’t likely to do well in Conquest.  Evoking traditional games, you need a healthy mix of tools.  You will want some shooting, some fast skirmishing/flanking options, some trusty chaff, and hard hitting units too.  Conquest REALLY rewards positioning, and also application of your rock, to your opponent’s scissors.  As such, don’t plan on buying five of any one thing, but instead try one or two of several options.

Consider Unit Classes:

In Conquest, units begin walking onto the table based on their classification.  A heavy-hitter monster might legitimately not even be on the table until the third turn, and taking too many such options will concede too much table control early on.  Similarly, nothing but Light units will prevent scoring of objectives.  A mix here will again serve you well.

Balance and Unit Sizes:

Conquest will surprise some of you with how both balanced and diverse its units can be.  Not only do all units serve a purpose, but the army building is so flexible that units can take on very different feelings at different sizes.

Three stands of Steel Legion can be a dangerous harasser, but six can be your center-piece murder squad.  Unlike many games. BOTH are real competitive options.  As a result, two boxes of these can add two really different feeling additions to your list, and both are worth experimenting with.

Starting Choices:

For those looking for a few specific standout options to consider, here are a few…

  1. The Core Set is an amazing value, and is the absolute best starting point for Spire or Hundred Kingdoms Generals-to-be.  Consider two as you will get a healthy amount of several real staple units.
  2. Nord and Dweg players can likewise start with the new value-rich faction sets, or do it more piecemeal.  Nord Raiders and Blooded will always have a place in your lists, as would Hold Thanes and Warriors.
  3. Spire players will not be disappointed with either Vanguard build, and 100K players likewise expanding beyond their Core Box will want Steel Legion, and a Lord on Foot.

Basically…:

Wherever you expand from there will be something that comes from your experience on the tables, and not merely from a popular netlist.  That is the exciting place new Conquest players find themselves in as this game spreads like wildfire!
