Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio and killer of fun, here once again to grace you with the golden light that are my thoughts and ramblings.
These last couple weeks sure have been exciting. I mean Games workshop has been giving us all kinds of great tidbits and info for us to comb over with a fine tooth comb. It’s not really the amount of info that they have given us but the possibilities of the new information and how we process and use this new information. There are a couple things that stand out to me and, as you might suspect, I do have some thoughts about all this. So lets get down to it.
New Codexes
Ok, I really like that they are going to have four new codexes. No, really I do. That will give us six codexes by the end of the year. My only *concern* is that these four new books are all power armor armies. Sure, one of them is chaos but I think we have enough Death guard models to last us a while. The other three are more space marines. Yes, they are the Jacob, Edward and Delta force marines but they are still more marines. I would have preferred something other than more marines since we are getting a codex with a million new units for them. Since these armies are actually included in the new Space Marine codex, there really is no hurry to release the sub faction codexes. I think throwing in a xenos codex (not Eldar) would have been better. At the very least it would have lessened the gnashing of teeth from certain sectors of the internet, although there really is no stopping that.
New Rules
The other thing that has been sprung on us is the release of some new rules. I actually don’t mind the rules themselves, I think that they are a good addition to the game and will help in reshaping the meta (where games are actually played). Maybe I’m just some poor country rules lawyer, but the issue I have is the way the rules are being released. I don’t understand why they are waiting until codex releases to role out these rule changes. I’m wondering why they just couldn’t include these new rules and keywords in the main rulebook. You have a new edition change, which is the perfect time to make changes like this. Maybe covid has something to do with it as I know it has played havoc with just about everyone and everything. Or maybe they just wanted to rules out there and they felt they could just tack them on when the codexes are released. In any case it seems that getting new core rules through codexes rather that the actual rulebook may be the new thing.
Be that as it may, I can’t wait for these books to be out so we can once again have rules all over the place, unless you have the app. Which leads me to believe that all this is being done so that you have to use the app since all the rules should be there. That’s just crazy talk though, right?
That’s all for this week. Let me know what you think, and what new stuff you are excited (or upset) about, in the comments section below. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook, Twitch, and Patreon pages to stay up to date on what we’re up to and when episodes drop!

COVID-19 is having a massive effect on GW (and all UK based companies). They only ahve a skeleton staff in the factory/warehouse and the design teams are primarily working from home. So four SM Codexes (roughly the same models/rules) makes sense.
And the UK is about to go back into lockdown so there may/ may not be releases on time.
TIMINGS: i thought these were for release in the New Year (Q1 of 2021).
I don’t mind the CORE rule not being in the Core Rules Book. It means that SM take a nerf and not all core units in the game. At a time when few serious tournaments are happening (and many major players have already indicated they won’t be entering any) this gives us time to work out what to do and away from a “death star”.
Rob Butcher, please stop commenting. You ruin every comment section. No one likes your comments and you add nothing to the discussion. Go take your useless thoughts to 4chan or some other backwater where they belong.
Preach! I tend to just ignore his comments now.
What’s the problem with his comment?
Right, this comment seems fair. Rob has a reputation for asinine statements, but this one was pretty pertinent.
Ah, yes, but COVID isn’t happening exclusively in the UK, so it actually doesn’t count as a real disease. The Chapter Approved missions don’t even mention COVID, it’s basically a houserule!
I think the idea of them ever getting into a “finished” place has been well debunked.
We all gave the benefit of the doubt at the start of 8th. New Edition. New Mechanics. Indexes. Great.
Wait till everyone has their Codex and it’ll be great they said. So we waited 2+ years and finally arrived at that point around July 2019 or so. Indexes were obsolete, everyone had a book, the game was really diverse. Sure, Ynnari were unnecessarily nerfed and Grey Knights still trash, but beyond that, it was the “wait till everyone had full-8th-edition-rules-moment” we were told to wait for. And instead of letting it sit a couple of years (with minor CA balance adjustments and new models of course), they just exploded everything within a month with Marines 2.0 and PA.
There just isn’t a “this will be finished” point. Not at the “start” of an edition. Not at the “end” of an edition. It’s just all constant flux of new mechanics and concepts that used to be “new edition level changes” bleeding into each other every couple of weeks.
But it’s such a convenient way to discard any criticism!
Quite the opposite.
It’s a critique of the “just wait till all the codexes/Chapter Approved/Psychic Awakening/whatever is released and it’ll make sense”-phrase that people keep throwing around since the first 8th Edition Index was printed.
Any criticism is valid in the moment, because the idea of a “final” form of any given design-period is a myth. GW always starts the “next generation” before even 10% of armies are updated to the last “big idea”.
Thus criticism of GW balance and rules-philosophy must be more emphatically levelled at the “presence” of any given weekend. The “wait and it’ll eventually be ok for everyone” has been proven a lie by 2 years of waiting for 8th Edition to “get everyone on the same page” (and another year waiting for PA to “get everyone on the same page”).
That’s my point Zweischneid. “just wait for the Codex” has been nonsense flying around for 20 years and half of the time it just gets worse once it arrives, at least if you’re Xenos player.
