Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to grumble about things that cause me to grumble in a grumbling way.
Warhammer 40,000 has a very expansive setting. There is a lot of lore for people to grab hold of and make their own. We see it a lot today when we go to grand tournaments and conventions. Plenty of people cosplay as their favorite space marine chapter, chaos warband, imperial guard regiment, or sister of battle. This is in addition to all the displays and custom built models that you see in people’s armies. It’s one of the things I enjoy about being in the hobby. I like seeing cool models and even cooler costumes. There is something that has always bugs me, especially on forums and Facebook groups, and that is when people start talking (typing) in Ork speech.
An example of this is something like “Oy ladz, can one uv ya gitz show me where to findz a good place fur sum krumpin'” or something to that effect. I don’t know why, but when I see someone writing a message in ork talk it makes me roll my eyes and not bother reading what the rest of the message has to say. In the past, when Games Workshop had the Outriders running local tournaments, there was one convention where they had play yell out “Waaagh!” and whoever yelled the loudest got the first turn. I did not even bother with it. Maybe that has something to do with it. I’ll actually get a line or 2 in before I check out. To me, when someone writes or starts talking like that I immediately equate it with the high pitch baby talk some people use in certain situations. I probably hate adult/baby talk even more but ork speak is a close second. Maybe it’s having the effect people want in causing an opponent discomfort during their game since some people don’t know what to do when confronted with someone talking in ork.
I know that it is a way for people to identify with their army. You see people like this that play other armies. I played against a Black Templar player in 3rd edition that really role played while playing the game. I crushed him. There also used to be an Emperor’s Children player at my local store that would lick his models before moving them. I would avoid him as much as possible. I’m not even going to elaborate about some of the Slaneesh conversions that I have seen in recent years. So, as you can see, there are other players that may take their obsession to that next level and are more out there. Be that as it may, I still find the ork speak kind of annoying but at least it’s not Tau. Although I do admit that hearing multiple WAAAAAGHS get shouted in a convention hall when one warboss shouts it is kind of fun.
