Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here talk about the nitty gritty universe that is Warhammer 40,000,
It’s finally here! The new edition of Warhammer 40,000 is upon to the relief of the many people that had been looking at faction focuses, grainy, and not so grainy, pictures of rules, and the random speculation by all the “experts” on the internet. Hopefully you are able to try out the rules in your area, whether at your local game store or at home with close family and friends. One of the other aspects of the game that will now shift into high gear for a lot of people is building army lists. It’s so easy to pass the time on your cell phone building the next big thing that you think will make a splash at the next tournament you’ll attend. I have been hard at work working on some list ideas for my armies. This week we’ll take a look at some of my ideas in the hopes that it van inspire you, or even help me.
Astra Militarum
I do enjoy armoured vehicles and not very many armies have as big as a selection as the Astra Militarum. With the need for durability and fast movement early on, the lists I’ve been toying with includes Leman Russes, Chimeras and Wyverns. These give me some protection for my troops and the added punch to deal with heavy target. I am stuck somewhat on where to go from there. I do have some special weapon squads that I can put in reserve and bring on later and I was toying with the fact that I could bring in some Scions to also add to the reserve pool. Even with all this I was thinking of adding Bullgryn but I feel like they don’t fit with the Armoured Fist feeling of the list. I’m not really sure what else to add but I do have a lot of good units to choose from.
Chaos Space Marines
Now I did leave them for a while and jumped to the Chaos Knights and even Space Marines. The new edition has caused me to look at them once again and I really do have an abundance of choices. In one list I have the classic fearless cultist horde with Abaddon at the head of it. I also have a list that has a bunch of Contemptor Dreads and other walkers. Then there is the list I am looking at that has mostly daemon engines and takes advantage of some of the special rules for them. At one point I even looked at adding Mutilators to my army. MUTILATORS! With this army, I really am all over the place and need to settle on a list to try out on the tabletop and see how it performs. I still may add those mutilators though.
Chaos Daemons
I’ve just recently started thinking about this army. I think that the Greater Daemons may actually have some play now. The new Obscure rule will help keep some of the Greater Daemons alive as most have less than 18 wounds, sorry Great Unclean One. My real question right now is whether I should go the god specific route or just create a list that has a mixed army. I see some of the benefits of a mixed army but the Loci for some of the gods are really good. I may just try mono god first and then add units from other gods if they can fulfill a role in my battle plan. I really hope the greater daemons plays out as I love the models and want to see them on the tabletop in tournaments.
That’s all for this week. I hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know what your think, and what lists you’re working on, in the comments section below.
And remember boys and girls, Frontline Gaming sells gaming products at a discount, every day in their webcart
I actually looked at Mutilators as well, because hey- they benefit from Daemon buffs, their low speed is less important on a smaller/more central board, and they’re pretty tough for their cost.
Then I remembered how abysmal their melee combat stats are. S7 AP-2 DmgD3 doesn’t quite measure up to, say, a Centurion or Aggressor or Terminator or basically anything, really. So back into the trash bin of ideas they went.
