As we get closer and closer to the release of the new edition, when ever that it, we start seeing a lot of chatter. We are sometimes fortunate to get some hidden knowledge about what’s coming up and usually get an answer from Games Workshop by then. Many times, however, we let our imaginations run wild and can come up with some pretty good stuff. This week we will look at a couple rumors and a much reviled home brew codex that were the toast of the town (forums) back in the day.
Tau Rail Gun
Back in the day, when Tau was a new race, there were a lot of rumors flying around. This was the first time that Games Workshop was going to introduce a brand new race. Nothing was ever hinted about it in lore before. One of the more colorful rumors was that of the Rail Gun. The rail Gun actually ended up being strength 10 with really good AP, I think AP 2 actually. One of the rumors about the gun was that it would be able to shoot through terrain at it’s target. This was a bit disconcerting and worried a lot of players. Luckily this rumor did not come to pass so a lot of anguish was averted.
The Pan Fo
This is a rumor but more of a tale of ancient Game Workshop forum lore. The Pan Fo was a homebrew codex. It was a race that floats on gas that was ejected from their bodies. It was originally posted on the Games Workshop forums and the author even managed to show the codex to Gav Thorpe at Games Day. There were some wonderful new terms from the codex such as Soupy Carapace, Buntblunders, and Gasflares. This went on for a number of years and kept alive in a number of other forums after Games Workshop shut theirs off. I still remember the forum title as it has become a classic, “Pan Fo being reviled!”
Squats
One can not talk about rumors without talking about Squats. Part of the original game, they were left off the galaxy when the game transitioned from 2nd to 3rd edition. During 2nd edition you could have played them using the index army list that Games Workshop had provided, but not in 3rd edition. Ever since then there is almost always someone mentioning that they heard how the squats would be coming back. Technically they did with the release of a couple squat bounty hunters by Forgeworld for the Necromunda game but we are still waiting for them to come back as a whole army. Although Games Workshop has joked about the army’s return, there are still those people in the dark corners of the galaxy that eagerly await that comeback of dwarfs on trikes.
