Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to talk about40K (sort of) in this trying time.
Well, almost everyone is on total lockdown when it comes to playing tabletop games in person. Most places have you Stay at Home and for the most part, people are doing just that. It does put a bit of a damper on those wild lists you came up with and now cannot test out. I mean you could always use some type of program to play other people but that can be a bit cumbersome and daunting for some people and may end up being more frustrating than actually playing the game in person. Have no fear, I have a few suggestions in order to get over your gaming boredom at home and give you some sense of that competitive spirit. That being said, here are some games, or rules, you can try to scratch that itch while at home.
This is the granddaddy of them all , for the modern wargaming era. As you can see, it was written by none other than H.G. Wells. It has rules for infantry, cavalry and artillery. It can easily be modified to include tanks. The beauty of the game is that you don’t need dice or such things as the only way to eliminate units is to knock them over with gunfire from the artillery. This could esily be adapted for use with your 40K models. Just don’t be too attached to them as you will be shooting projectiles at your painstakingly painted models. It’s alright though, you have plenty of time while at home to touch up any paint that comes off.
This is somewhat similar to the previous option. The time period shifts, however to the medieval ages, a time of castle and sieges. You use the crossbows and catapults to try to bring down your opponent’s walls and, as before, to knock down your opponent’s figures. This brings back the range guessing of 3rd edition that a lot of old Imperial Guard players miss. This is perfect to replace your Age of Sigmar games as you can use this set to recreat the battles at Archaon’s Dreadforts. It’s a lot of fun for everyone, and they even have a Pirate version so you can recreate battles in the sky with your Kharadon Overlords.
If you have a large playing area, like a floor or something, then this game is fun to play. If you miss the old days of rank & flank armies then this is a gem for you. Play as the humans to fend off the evil monsters. It is hex based movement and activation is done by a deck of cards. Very simple to play and you can tell that some of the models look really familiar to a certain miniature manufacturer that helped make this game. Still fun to play and you can find the sets for a pretty good price. You can maybe swap some of the units for Age of Sigmar units, so you can maybe pretend to be playing a current game. Either way, be sure you have plenty of floor space and watch your step!
