Hey everybody! Adam, from TFG Radio, here once again to bless you with the doddering musings of my mind.
I have a lot of models in my chaos collection. There are some from the early days of 40K and obviously include the recent models that have been released by Games Workshop. When I build armies for other codexes, however, I tend to only buy the models that I actually plan to use. I make additions to the army as I play the list and adjust it according to my experiences after a few games. Usually this is fine and my collections, although somewhat small, were competitive for a while. Well this seems to have changed with 8th edition. The rapid release of new rules and armies, the bi annual release of the Big FAQs, the follow up FAQs for those just released rules, and the annual Chapter Approved, all tell me one thing. I need to have all the models. Preferably 3 of each.
Now some may argue that you don’t really need to change or grossly adjust your army. Look at some of the top builds currently, excluding Space marines. Although there are a few armies that seem to only have one viable build right now, Tau and Necrons, for example, the constant flux in rules and point values do affect what people take in their army. Units that may have been good, but overpriced, are now in high demand because their cost has been lowered, or the units everyone had been using has had their cost increased. Something as simple as the FAQ can have a huge impact on a unit, whether intended or not. the best example of this is the Lord Discordant. When first released, not very many players expected much from the Lord Discordant, except that it looked cool on the tabletop. Thanks to the FAQ that allowed characters to benefit from Legion Traits, the stock of the Lord Discordant skyrocketed to the point where is is a rare occasion that you see less than 3 on the table.
As you’re reading this, we should be getting the first inklings of what to expect from this year’s Chapter Approved. As we see what the changes are we start to think of new lists and we tell ourselves whether we have the models, have enough of the models, or if we don’t have the models at all. We then begin to see what we need to buy in order to catch up with the new hotness. The thing we are seeing, however, is that, with the rapid releases, by the time you are ready to march on the battlefields the new hotness has already arrived and, if you want to chase the meta, you now have to pivot to the new, better, army. In the end I think, to make things easier, you just need to buy every codex option in you army. This includes Forgeworld. Its really the only way to be sure that you have the units ready to go and not have to wait or make crappy proxies because they are sold out. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go out and corner the Mutilators market. I’m telling you its the next big thing!
