Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to discuss the finer nuances of why things make me mad.
As many of you know I am one of the judges for the Las Vegas Open. Recently this has resulted in being asked to help judge other events, which I love doing. One of the things we ask players to do, for all of these events, is to be sure that their models are painted and correctly represent the unit they are supposed to be. There are times when Games Workshop either stopped making a model, discontinued a model, the model may be too expensive, or you may not like the Games Workshop model at all. In these cases people tend to create their own version of a model and want to use it in the next tournament they go to. This is all fine and dandy but please be sure to check with the tournament organizer of the event beforehand if the custom model is okay to use.
Please don’t wait until the last minute to check with the tournament organizers. I know everyone gets excited about that new model they are building and can’t wait to show it off. You work so hard that you may forget that, although obvious to you, it may be hard to tell what the model is supposed to represent. If you wait too long to check you had better be prepared to not being able to use it. You should have a back up, like maybe the actual model, just in case it is rejected or they allow it with the condition that you use the actual model if your opponent objects. If you wait too long, tournament organizers are so busy as the event draws near that they may not respond in time. Because of this, you won’t have anytime to correct the model or get a suitable replacement.
If you really want to live on the edge, don’t even bother asking the tournament organizer at all. I’m sure its fine to show up with your space marine dreadnought that you made out of marshmallows. Why would you need permission? It’s the right dimensions, right? So what if you use it in the middle of the tournament as a midday snack or squish it down so it’s easier to hide for line of sight. When you blindside the tournament organizers like that it causes issues that really should have been nipped in the bud. At the very least it will cause the model to be removed from your army for the tournament, with little or no chance to fill that void with something else. Worst case, depending on how you react usually, it can even cause you to be disqualified from the entire event, and you don’t want that. So be fsure to get those questionable models checked out so that you can have a good time rolling dice and taking names!
