3D printed models or pirated rule-books/codexes are, at the end of the day, theft. Plain and simple.
There is no difference between that person and the person who stole Jim Vesal’s army.
If anything, the 3D printed stuff is worse.
If you steal a person’s army from an airport or tournament, you’re “only” stealing stuff that had disposable income invested into it, not life-essentials.
If you’re pirating codexes or 3D print files from weird web-sites, that’s potentially diminishing incomes and or threatening jobs (though luckily GW is pretty well off these days) for people who depend on that money for food, mortgages and their children’s college eduction, not just for toy soldiers.
And either form of stealing is obviously magnitudes worse that, say, water-bottle shenanigans or malicious types of slow-play or playing with loaded dice or what have you, which aren’t legal violations of any kind and just violations of game rules.
>3D printed models are theft
They aren’t, though. Not legally, and I would argue not morally, either, any more than seeing someone else’s drawing and making a drawing of your own based on it is “theft.” Now, if you are _selling_ them and claiming them as your own work… okay, yeah, that’s kinda shitty and more arguable, but that is very rarely the case.
So the guy went through all the effort to make the digital „drawing“ to print a Caladius for himself, but couldn‘t be bothered to even slap on a primer?
It‘s possible ….. but if you’re giving people that much of a benefit of the doubt, everyone who‘s ever got a yellow/red card in a tournament for dodgy shit is owed an apology, lol.
Part of the complaint was that the model didn’t have guns, which to me would seem to imply he was not finished with it. Many, many people out there do not paint or prime their models until they are finished with assembly.
Legally theft or not, it’s destructive to the hobby as a whole.
How so? In my experience, the advent of 3D printing has vastly expanded the possibilities for players to customize their models and create unique bits and thus greatly improved the hobby, not harmed it.
If you can print models instead of buying them from GW or the FLG store, that will hurt their business. If GW and FLG don’t make money on their products then we can kiss fun events and the ITC goodbye.
To be clear, I’m talking about printing whole models and being allowed to use them at events, not printed details on shoulder pads or bits.
Printing models is not generally cheaper than buying the GW option by a significant amount- if you’re buying the printer yourself you’re sinking $500-$1000 into that, plus the filament, plus dozens or hundreds of hours of design time.
If you’re getting it from someone else, you can expect to pay something like $50 or more for that tank, which is not actually much cheaper than the current options. (Yes, FW itself is more expensive, but that has always been the case, even when comparing FW to GW.) In that sense, 3D printed models are no different than any other 3rd party option.
At some potential future point in time it’s possible that 3D printing costs will have come down enough, and quality gone up enough, that they will be a legitimate threat to GW. But by that time GW themselves will probably be utilizing the technology, so I’m not sure it will have any real effect there.
I feel like you’re a bit biased due to your connection with 3D printing and the sponsorship to your show.
Printing IP even if just for personal use (ie not sell) and then taking that to events that exist because of GW’s game and the ITC format will directly hurt those two entities due to lack in their sales. Bottom line. These events and game exists because people are making money. If those people stop making money they will have to re-evaluate in some way or shape.
If ITC and GW offer 3D printed items and people buy those, it’s completely different because they’re making money of the technology.
>I feel like you’re a bit biased due to your connection with 3D printing and the sponsorship to your show.
If by that you mean I know someone who owns a 3D printer, then yeah. I think that’s less “biased” and more “informed,” though.
>Printing IP even if just for personal use (ie not sell) and then taking that to events that exist because of GW’s game and the ITC format will directly hurt those two entities due to lack in their sale
So I’ll ask again: do you feel the same way about other 3rd-party items that are produced by more “traditional” means (e.g. scratchbuilt, resin-cast, or plastic-molded)? If not, what makes them different from 3D printing?
They can yeah, which is why you see FLG ban third party models from the streamed LVO finals.
The 3rd party model ban was because GW was streaming it, not our choice specifically, actually.
Please check Copyright law…
What parts of copyright law do you think he is violating?
I have to agree with AP as long as he is using it for his own enjoyment and not selling it or distributing the prints there is not breach of Copy-write law. I do not see how this is harmful in anyway, GW is free to make there own models and sell them, as am I even if I use their “IP” to do so as long as it is for my own enjoyment and I do not sell or distibute the items.
Copy-written holders have spent inordinate amounts of money to change the CW laws (mainly extend the length of them) and starting with DVDs (preventing you from copying an item you purchased) they are trying to convince you that any or use duplication is against the law which is just not the case
I’ve never wished I could post meme responses on this site more than I do right now.
Pablo, you are very wrong about my army, Happy to come and talk about it and why I made the changes but my normal army is less skewed to be honest.
Put the man on the show Pablo! Or we gonna steal him for TFG Radio 😉
Anytime TFG>CT anyways now that the Canadians are gone.
The Canadians aren’t gone! I was on the last episode I think…it is hard to remember as I am old now.
TFG > ____?
sURELY YOU jeST
You should have him on John, it would make a great episode.
Jim we would of course love to have you on again. Geoff cleared up my incorrect definition of a skew list, so I know i’m wrong now. I also didn’t consider a lot of the things that your list could do, or the fact that it really doesn’t have any bad match ups.
I think I remember Don Hooson saying in his 2018 BAO winners interview that part of the reason he took Blightlord Terminators was because he didn’t want to travel with Morty. Crazy to think of the flow on effect that win had given a different sculpt on Mortarian could’ve meant a different list.
Sean confirmed Salvador main – solid choice.
Nah, Salv is my alt. Imma Gaige main.
Glad someone got it, tho.
Krieg main over here ^-^
I can respect your kind of psychopathic crazy, even if it’s not my kind of psychopathic crazy. One of my buddies plays a flame Krieg build and it is a monster to behold.
