GW Grognard: Over the hill and through the woods

Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to lend you the stream of consciousness that is me!

I go to a lot of tournaments. Whether it’s to play or officiate at the event, I enjoy going to events. I am lucky in that there are a lot of events, big and small, within driving distance of where I live. I have traveled to events farther away, such as Nova last year and Boise Cup. In cases like this I must fly to these events and usually fly back home. In some few cases, like Boise Cup, I decide to drive the 15+ hour trip (one way).

First things first, I enjoy driving. Now I do live, and work, in one of the worst commute cities in the country, if not the world. Now there are a few things that help make the drive more enjoyable. Because I have a long commute, and used to drive for work, I had plenty of time to listen to almost all 75+ 40K podcasts out there (that’s a topic for another time). I also enjoy seeing some area of a city or area that most people don’t get to see. I know that most people just see Las Vegas, or Reno if they feel like slumming, but going on a long drive you get to see the less known areas of Nevada. Although, truthfully, there isn’t much to see in Nevada, although it is interesting to see the signs telling you the number to call in case you hear gunshots out in the wasteland that is Fallout, I mean Nevada.

I also enjoy meeting people as I travel the open road. It’s also a reason why I enjoy tournaments. I can meet a larger spectrum of people the larger the event, and the longer I drive. I know that there is the chance that I could run into unsavory characters, but I have been fortunate enough to either not have that happen at all, or it was a situation I was easily able to get out of. Although some may prefer driving alone, I prefer to travel with another person. Hopefully someone that cam also drive. This helps with the driving duties and can help keep your mind on track while driving. If you do a podcast it also helps provide material for future episodes or bonus material.

I know that cost can be an issue, especially with the cost of gas and car maintenance, but I really suggest you take a road trip with your friends and/or teammates at least once. It will make for a fun time and great stories to tell. So get out there and start forging your own personal narrative.

That’s all for this week, I hope you enjoyed the read. Let me know your thoughts, and your road trip stories, in the comments section. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook, Twitch, and Patreon pages to stay up to date on what we’re up to and when episodes drop!
