Since its release in July of last year, Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team has gradually carved out a niche within the tournament scene. After the inaugural Kill Team tournament at NOVA 2018, the stage was set for similar events at Warhammer World, The Las Vegas Open and Adepticon.
At the Bay Area Open there will be two separate Kill Team events, one each on Saturday May 25th and Sunday May 26th. Both events will start at 9am and go for 4 rounds, with a cut to a top 4.
What do I need to play?
I’m glad you asked! First you will want a copy of the Kill Team Core Manual (that includes the rules for the game and nearly every faction). Then you will want to pick your favourite Warhammer 40k faction. Kill Team uses the same miniatures as Warhammer 40k, which are always available from the Frontline Gaming store of course!
Each player will then need to create a 20-model Kill Team Command Roster, from a single faction. The Command Roster essentially acts as a “sideboard” or “pool” of units that you can choose from before each game. This allows you to pick the specific combination of models (up to 100 points) which are best suited to deal with your opponent’s faction. The subtle nuances of choosing your team’s models from your Command Roster, before each game, is one of the great strategic challenges of Kill Team!
The tournaments will feature 18 total secondary objectives to choose from for every mission. Although, players will only be able to choose 3 of these Secondary Objectives before each game, so choose wisely! In order to keep track of each game’s scores and objectives, easy-to-use score sheets will be provided to both players for every round. Here is what they look like:
In order to create a unique and balanced event, both Arena AND Non-Arena terrain will be used!
This will be accomplished by having both an Arena board and regular-terrain set up side-by-side at each table. Each round of the tournament just ONE of these setups will be used, to ensure that all players have an equal number of games played on both the Arena boards and regular terrain. Rules for Arena walls and doors etc. (from the Kill Team: Arena Expansion), will be in effect when playing on the Arena boards. The missions being used have had their objective-marker locations positioned in a way so they work with all 4 of the Arena Kill Zones, as well as any other terrain setup.

One final point, that many players have asked us about, is in regards to the upcoming Kill Team ‘Elites’ Expansion. The release date for this expansion is yet to be announced, although it would make a great addition to this event! If the Elites Expansion is released in time for BAO (ie. pre-orders by May 11th), the new units from it WILL be allowed in the tournament, so cross your fingers!
