Games Workshop is constantly evolving in terms of their model kits. Many of their kits from the early days are vastly different in quality, and size, compared to models produced today. There are many models in the line that need to be redone, I’m not here to talk about that. Eventually Games Workshop will get to your favorite model or unit. I am still waiting for a new sculpt for baby Abby and his little kid arms. What needs to be addressed is the issues that come up when a new model is released, especially when the new model is a much different size than the previous version. When a new model is released that is a much different size, then you should buy the new model as soon as possible, if you plan on playing in any tournaments.
In most cases, the difference in size is not that big of an issue. It’s really just a few millimeters and doesn’t have a big impact on the game. However, there are a few models that have a large difference in size. The main culprit of this are the Greater Deamons of Chaos. The newer models are almost three times the size of the models that they replaced. As a result, the model can greatly effect a person’s tabletop experience depending on which model you are using. The smaller models allow it to hide easier and thus be less susceptible to being shot. the smaller bases, although diminishing any auras that it may have, allow the model to move through ruins a little easier. the longer you wait to get the correct model, some people may see you as “modeling for advantage”. This can cause a lot of conflict, both during and outside of the game, and can actually affect your reputation in the community.
I know that Games Workshop models are expensive. I once was able to get 3 rhinos for $20, but that was almost 30 years ago. There are many ways to get the latest models. There are sites that will give you cash, or store credit, for trade in s for that new model. There are plenty of places that give discounts, or have sales, on plenty of product in their store. You could even save up the money and purchase the new model later, especially if its for a large event coming up. Most events will give you some leeway in terms of when you should have the newest model. In regards to the greater daemons, however, you should be using them now. there is really no excuse at this point. The last greater deamon model, the Great Unclean One, was released in early 2018. So get out there and stop using your old greater daemons as such. They have been demoted to daemon princes, and will probably see more use as such, but that’s a topic for another day.
