The Hellboy movies have been pretty solid if you like fantasy and action. However, this new reboot of the franchise has a lot of potential and we’ve been watching the development here at the shop.
Based off of the popular comic book, Hellboy is the story of a half-daemon gone good. He was summoned to earth as a baby by Nazi scientists but rescued by US forces who raised him. He eventually joined the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) and goes on all kinds of awesome adventures fighting against the supernatural.
So we’ll see how this one goes but so far we’re really liking what we see.
You all excited to watch Hellboy?

There is an entire category of life — perhaps unknown to some — a category of things where you ask “would this be better if Ron Perlman were involved?”
Would this 40k tournament be better if Ron Perlman were in it? — Yes, obviously.
Would this family dinner be better if Ron Perlman showed up at out door? — Duh.
Would this TV show be worse if Ron Perlman left (I’m looking at you Sons of Anarchy) — Without question.
Would this film be better if Ron Perlman were in it? — Yes.
I want to like this movie, I really do. I love Hellboy. But Ron set the bar so darn high, I’m not sure this movie can fill those shoes.
Best comment of the day, lol
At first, I was unsure if I wanted a Hellboy movie without Ron Perlman or Guillermo Del Toro involved. After this trailer, though, I’m optimistic. I also have learned over the years not to worry too much about a character being recast. Even in cases where I have a favorite portrayal, I never go into anything expecting the same from a different actor. For example: I didn’t go into The Dark Knight expecting anything on the level of Mark Hamill’s Joker from Heath Ledger. I mean, yeah, it’s kind of a cliche at this point to give Mark Hamill the “Best Joker Performance” award, but he has it for a reason. That said, Heath Ledger’s performance surprised me and a lot of other people. While I still prefer Hamill, Ledger was great in his own right, IMO. So in this case, even if I end up preferring Ron Perlman at the end, it might not be due to disliking the new actor. It would just mean Ron Perlman set the bar really high, even if the new performance is great. I do the same thing with reboots, in general. Instead of pre-judging the reboot based on the original, I set neutral expectations, and judge the reboot for what it is. I feel like I can compare and contrast it with the original more appropriately, that way. So instead of asking, “Can the new Hellboy fill Ron Perlman’s shoes?” I’ll be asking, “Can the new Hellboy fill the shoes of the character Hellboy’s shoes?”
A bit of a ramble, I know, but those are my thoughts. On another note, I can usually tell when a reboot is probably going to be a complete disaster. Red flags come up in the trailer, if that’s the case. Not getting any of that here, but I have been wrong in the past. Good trailer, bad movie, or bad trailer, good movie, and everything. Also, that first promo image reminds me of the cover of the original Realm of Chaos book. Regardless of how the movie turns out, that’s brilliant, to me.
Soo bummed they never finished the 3rd film…
They were so close!
Not an aficionado of the comics but enjoyed the Del Toro ones for what they were
Yeah, they were fun. I was hoping to see the third one as well.
