News
- This week’s GW pre-orders have been causing some hurt feels due to them being available in such small quantities. So good luck grabbing one, they’re going to be gone in the blink of an eye, unfortunately.
- On the horizon though, are two big releases for 40K: Chapter Approved and Vigilus Defiant! These are going to have a big impact on the game in terms of the competitive meta as well as narrative and open gaming, too! We’re excited to see how people react to them.
- Some examples of the new Specialist Detachments:
- We’re coming down to the last two months before the LVO 2019! It’s going to be an amazing event with record breaking attendance and some positively massive events! We can’t wait to see you all there so be sure to get your tickets if you have not done so.
- The Bay Area Open 2019 is also approaching and we’re excited to have it in the new venue. Grab those tickets if you don’t want to miss out on the fun.
- We’ll be building terrain this weekend–Saturday and Sunday–at FLG if anyone wants to come by and lend a hand, it would be greatly appreciated. We’ll have food and drinks for those that pitch in!

I muuuuuch prefer specialist detachments now that we know how they work.
The thing I disliked about formations was that you had to take a specific number of units, as if somehow having one more or one less of that squad would magically make them forget how to do the thing.
Just picking a detachment and everything in it gets the rules is a far better way, it makes so much more sense.
Absolutely love the formations.
They’re fun =)
This stuff looks cool but I’m concerned about 8th ed getting bloated. Right now if you go monofaction, you need:
The base rule book
Your faction codex
Most recent Chapter Approved
Vigilus Defiant/Campaign Book if you run a specialist detatchment.
And possibly a Forgeworld index if you run FW.
I’m also a little miffed that GSC get specialist detatchments before getting a Codex? WTF GW.
Eh, I don’t know of any tabletop games that don’t require you to lug books around (or a PDF reader, etc.). Just a part of it.
There are actually a good number that don’t. Malifaux, Infinity, and several others require only either cards or a core rulebook to have stats for most/all units.
In all fairness, the “base rule book” is a free 8 page pamphlet. I wouldn’t consider that something you lug around.
When compared to the contents of rules in editions past, you practically don’t even need to carry that pamphlet either. Certainly not the full book with the fluff.
You actually need the full BRB, because the 8page free version does not have any of the rules for matched play.
The matched play rules have almost all been re-written in the big FAQ’s at this point.
No event I go to uses book missions. Deployment maps are *usually* included on the hand out missions at said events.
I haven’t lugged round the BRB in sometime.
Then again, after working on the INAT for all those years, with having a much larger core rule set, GW FAQ and the INAT stuff we did all memorized, it makes this current edition a breeze by comparison. But im “that guy” who memorizes everything. I only bring the FAQ and Codex to show others if they have questions. I’ve not needed rules/codex books on hand for my own use since second edition. After a few read throughs of the materials, of course.
Still though, pamphlet + Big FAQ has you covered for Matched Play, generally speaking.
I would argue that you really don’t need chapter approved, or the FW index either.
You can print/take pictures of any relevant points changes or rules. I don’t have Vigilus Defiant, but I suspect it might be the same for that book too.
Ultimately, it’s up to each player to decide how inconvenienced they want to be. I personally DO lug around 4-5 books at most events I go to because I choose to run multiple faction armies, and like having all of my rules in book form readily available.
I certainly don’t blame GW for that decision.
Yeah, it’s better than not getting updated points.
And as I have said, I just write the points in to my codex.
Depends on whether the points changes are actually an improvement or not. Some puzzling stuff in what we are hearing so far.
Writing the points into the codex is great until they change them for the fourth time and you’re trying to overwrite black with black with black. 😛
I mean, sure, you can just have printouts/etc of the relevant pages you need from a given book, but that doesn’t actually negate the need for the book.
Now I need frontline gaming to have a Chapter Approved review unit bluffs done by Reece and one of all the Nerfs done by Reecieo! (Complete with evil mustache avatar)
Well, I for one am glad to see the massive point reduction crisis suits got. Down from 42 base to 27, and most of the weapons got cheaper too. A triple burst cannon suit went from 66 points to just 51, same for triple plasma, missile pods suits down from 114 to 72.
Witholding a ton of comments right now. I’ll just state other, more accomplished people’s opinion:
“Power armor has gotten worse after chapter approved if these pts changes are all we’re getting”
That is all.
