- We’ve got some really exciting Black Friday deals planned for this year that we think will be a big hit! Not only are we offering some incredible savings but we’re also gong to be releasing a host of new products, too! - We’re celebrating Frontline Gaming’s birthday! Frontline Gaming is turning 7. We thought it would be fun to take a little trip down memory lane…
- It all started back in the summer of 2011 when we decided to host our very own GT called the BAO. We had no idea what to expect but it ended up being a smashing success and while we only made $14 on the event, lol, we worked together very well as a team and had fun pulling off a complex task with no prior experience. From there, we decided to open up a gaming store and thus Frontline Gaming was born!
- We didn’t have much money and pretty much zero experience in running a retail shop but we had a lot of enthusiasm for it and the willingness to make the best of what little we had.
- Our shop was a tiny 450sqft hole in the wall in a little town called Martinez, CA, but we made it work however we could, and had the help and support of awesome people to keep us going.
- Some colorful characters joined forces with us and we are so thankful for their help!
- The space was small but we did our best with it and the fact that we had so little money or space forces us to be very creative to make ends meet which has helped us greatly in the long run.
- We started taking our first steps in the realm of making terrain and gaming surfaces with our custom sets but everything was handmade on painted cloth and while it looked cool, it wasn’t scalable. That is when we joined up with our friends at Tablewar who were also looking into developing a gaming surface and we teamed up to take a shot at bringing a new product to the market and were so excited to see how popular they ended up being! We funded a successful Kickstarter and through a lot of hard work and a lot of money risked, a new and now mainstream gaming product was born.
- It was a proud moment when that first shipment of our very own product arrived! And a LOT of work, lol, but it helped push the business forward faster than we had hoped and advanced our goals.
- At this time we were also extremely active as Mercenary TOs! Anyone that had the space and wanted a 40k event, we’d pack up the crew and the gear and go to their event to help them out. We ran as many as 5 GTs in a year all over the western USA and got to do some incredible events in giant comic conventions or in places we’d never been before. We even got to meet cool people like Stan Lee! While it was a lot of fun, and we made many valuable contacts, it was extremely hard work for almost no money and we came to realize that if we wanted to do this as a profession and not just as an awesome hobby, we had to go in to the convention business for ourselves.
- We had gone to the GW Throne of Skulls event in Vegas before we started Frontline and had a blast! The event had only run one year though and as we had wracked up a lot of experience running large scale events, we felt ready to give it a shot ourselves. This was a massive risk though, as we were betting the farm. If the LVO fell on its face, we were going bankrupt. But, while Frontline was turning a profit at that time, it was a very modest profit and we knew if we were going to grow and continue to run Frontline as a sustainable career we had to take some chances. So we rolled the dice and went for it…and it was a huge success!
- Seeing how much fun everyone has was such a great payoff to what was a very stressful and risky play. We knew we had a winner on our hands and ran with it. Year after year the event grew rapidly and continues to do so! From 10,000sqft in year one to a 40,000sqft behemoth in year three that we wondered how we’d ever fill to now having over 130,000sqft and still running out of room for all the fun stuff!
- However, we were also seeing steady growth with the good old trusty BAO, too!
- These successes allowed us to upgrade our store and move to San Diego (Reece’s hometown) and so we pulled up roots and took off for a new adventure!
- We made a big push into media and Twitch specifically and while it was a lot of fun and we made some great contacts, it just wasn’t making any money so we had to dial it back after a few years of really going for it. We hope to return to it in time but for the amount of work it took to do, it was losing us money. But, we did get to do some awesome stuff like present at TwitchCon and make contacts that would really help to move live streaming at events in a very exciting direction, some of which is still in development but coming soon!
- While in San Diego, we decided to take another big risk and start manufacturing gaming mats here in the USA. So after a profitable and successful partnership on the previous gaming mat project we parted ways and rolled the dice on investing in very expensive manufacturing equipment and a much larger facility. After a lot of stress and hard work though, it all came together and the FLG Mats were born!
- We also decided to make terrain to complement the awesome mats and made the investment of time and money into getting ITC Terrain going which has also been quite popular!
- And also decided to run another Major here in Southern California, the SoCal Open which has been a lot of fun! Throughout all of it we saw the growth of the ITC to help get everyone organized, and got to start working with GW directly, which was a gamer’s dream come true!
- Through all the ups and downs, the highs and lows, we can only thank you all for being there to support us with your business, enjoying the media, coming to the events, current and former employees, our family and friends who’ve supported us. Without you, none of this awesome adventure would have been possible so thank you to everyone that has been a part of it! Here’s to the future!
