As you are reading this I am in Washington, DC for the NoVA Open convention. It’s an annual event that features a lot of top players from all over North America, and also is a charity event. I get to meet new people, when I play, and see other people that I’ve met, and known, over the years. This brings up a point that if you can, you should got to conventions, and not just attend Rogue Trader Tournaments.
Conventions are a little different than a regular RTT, or even Grand Tournament that you may attend. Conventions provide you with much more than just a bunch of games to be played. If you look at what is available at a convention, there are a whole host of events. Between the painting workshops, writer’s workshops, seminars from the actual manufacturers of your favorite games, there are plenty of things to do that may not involve rolling dice and sweating over making that crucial decision. Whether you are playing ina tournament, or just hanging out, you will meet a whole bunch of new people. These just won’t be people that you play against but people that you are in a workshop with, or even just people that are passing by and you both have a love for a certain game and/or model line.
That’s not to say you shouldn’t also go to Rogue Trader Tournaments or Grand Tournaments. A lot of times, you will still meet great people and gain a lot of memories from the event. With a convention, in most cases, they run for a longer period, and have many other events you can play in or just watch. It expands the range of people that you meet and helps expand your knowledge in the miniature gaming world. I can’t stress enough how helpful someone you met at a convention can be. They may not make you rich, but they will most certainly be very helpful as you repeatedly see and meet with them at conventions. Now this is all predicated on your own attitude. If you go in with a bad attitude then that will be what you get out of it, along with a reputation for such an attitude. You go in with a good attitude and willing to make new friends, and I guarantee that you will come out of it with a whole new set of friends that could last you a lifetime.
