Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to dispense the thoughts in my mind into yours!
By the time this article is posted I should be in Santa Clara for the Bay Area Open. I have been going to the tournament every year for the past 3 years. I enjoy it very much and plan on to continue going in the future. I know that some people fly up there, it’s only about an hour flight, and find that the convenience of the trip to be much more easier and stress free than other methods of getting there. I go with at least one club mate, if not multiple club mates, and this year is no different. We will be driving up to the event, and that means ROAD TRIP!
I enjoy driving a lot. I drive a lot for my work, and still enjoy it. Currently, the longest drive I have made for a 40K tournament was a 16hr, one way, trip for the Boise Cup Grand Tournament, by myself. Although I probably wouldn’t drive that long by myself again, I would make the drive to the event. There are a few things about road trips that I enjoy.
Once I get out of a major city, I like the view of the landscape as I drive by. When I was driving to Boise I went to a part of Nevada that wasn’t Las Vegas and actually reminded of the wasteland in Fallout: New Vegas. There are areas of the state, and neighboring states, that you would never see if you flew over them. I enjoy meeting, and talking, with the various people while on the way. Whether its at a local Dennys, restaurant of choice when I travel with Allan (formally of 11th Company Podcast), or just at the local gas station, its always nice to meet new people. The conversations you have with the friends you are traveling with, the “adventures” that sometimes occur with said friends, all add to the stories you tell friends, new and old, in the future. Now, all that being said, there are a few downsides to being on a road trip.
As with anything you do in life, there are some risks. Brakes could go bad during your trip, you could damage the car, or get in an accident. However these could happen close to home as well. One time, driving back from the Bay Area Open, we drove near a cow farm and the smell of a few hundred cows had hit us like a brick wall. High temperatures didn’t help with that either, lol. Sometimes, you have to get gas in the middle of the night at a place that may not seem the safest place to be. Although I did mention that I enjoy meeting people, there are time when people aren’t so nice. Although these situations can be a bit daunting, I don’t believe they are any more dangerous than if you are near your own home. In the end, I think the fun and excitement of a road trip with friends is something any wargamer should do at least once in their lifetime.
