I am currently in the process of reorganizing my gaming room. I am going through some of my stuff and getting rid of a lot models and armies that I will never use or are just projects I will never finish. In the back of my mind I already know, that no matter how much stuff I get rid of, there is still a ton more. More importantly, I know that I will son be adding to the hoard and I will end up having more than I gave away, because too much is never enough, right?*
As it is well documented, I have been playing 40K for a very long time. However, I have been playing wargames, in general, since I was 10. As a result, in addition to having a large 40K and Games Workshop collection, I have a large tabletop wargaming collection that spans over 30 years. It covers almost the full gambit of game. Since I started in historicals, I have a lot of the early historical games. De Bellis Antiquiatis (DBA), Fire and Fury (ACW), Shako (Napoleonics), Tactica (Ancients/Medieval), are just a few of the games that I still have. I still collect the ruleset, at the very least, for current games as well. Blood & Plunder (Pirates), SAGA (Dark Ages), Ronin (Feudal Japan), Hail Caesar! (Ancients), any of the Flames of War series of modern era games, and Black Powder (Napoleonics), are another sampling of the current set of historical games that I ether have the ruleset for, or have at least some figures and am able to play a game or two. Then we get into the other Sci-fi and Fantasy games on the market that pique my interest. Games like Star Wars:Legion, and Battletech have started to catch my eye. All this and I still want to build new armies for 40K, maybe dabble in some Age of Sigmar, and am already chomping at the bit to play Adeptus Titanicus, along with the new Blood Bowl League starting up at my local store. This isn’t even the full list of games, books, and models that I have, and you know what? I don’t care.
I really enjoy my hobby and I make no excuses about it. Whether its historical, sci fi, or any other type of tabletop gaming genre, I enjoy reading the back story of the game world, and playing games that maybe tell a bit of that story. Now the downside is that I sometimes don’t have the time to get an army ready or even set up a game for the non-GW systems I want to play. Other times, it’s simply tough to find someone to play with. I still want the games because I think they are fun and I always have the hope that someone will also find interest and play a game. So no, I don’t think I’m a hoarder at all. That’s right, my fine collection of out of print games is well worth the time and money spent in the upkeep and storage needed for games I play once in a blue moon. In the meantime, I will continue to add to the various armies that I have for 40K.
