Welcome everyone to another week of grumbling. Now, over the years I have played a lot of armies. I believe I have played just about every army, or at least have build a few models from every army, through all the editions. I love the list building aspect of the hobby, and I enjoy building Games Workshop models because of the possibilities of poses available to most models. However, there is one thing I loathe doing, and that is painting.
Back when Games Workshop ran the RTTs I used to paint a lot. The reason for this was that they required 3 color minimum and based. So even to participate in a local RTT you had to have your army completely painted and based. I would spend hours getting my army ready for the next day’s tournament because I always put it off until the last minute.
Today, with the relaxed restrictions on local events, I’ve become even more complacent to get my army painted and based. It isn’t until there is a major tournament on the horizon that I actually get off my ass and begin painting the army or units I want to use. Even if I do have the time to paint models, I usually just start building models instead. My wargaming plate is pretty full. Between the two 40K armies I am building I also have about 3 or 4 armies from other game systems that are in the queue. Even with those game systems I have the same issue of getting motivated to paint them. Now, I have seen a few suggestions to help.
Painting Service: In the last few years, thank to the internet and rise of Facebook, we have seen a large amount of painting services pop up that offered varying levels of cost, service, and results. If you just look and talk to customers I’m sure you can easily find a service that would work well for you. I have only one issue with it. I’m a cheap bastard. I would much prefer the suffering of painting the models myself rather than pay someone else to do it. There is also the satisfaction of seeing my army on the tabletop fully painted by me and looking beautiful, I guess.
1 hour a night: This, along with other clever slogans like “365 hours in 365 days”, are nice as they help to get going by starting out small, then the next thing you know you’re about 3 or 4 hours in your painting session. The issue that I am having is that I am too lazy when I get home. Sometimes I just want to come home an flop on the couch. Actually it’s not sometimes, it’s all the time.
Don’t go out of your garage: This is probably the easiest answer. I can simply just stay home, play garagehammer or even just regular 40K nights at my FLGS. I would not have to worry about painting my models ever because I would basically be playing games against my brother at his house, or mine. This isn’t too big of an issue for me, except I really don’t like my brother
So where does this leave me? I guess I have to find the motivation to paint my damn models. I know I’ll eventually get my stuff painted, and I know I just need to make the time. I just need that little push to get me started. It’s just so damn hard for me to get motivated about it, I hate it so much.
