Hello everyone Geoff “iNcontroL” Robinson here! Recently I had FLG take on my Adeptus Custodes to make them look incredible and so far, they have not disappointed! Before that though I knew I had fallen in love when the GW community folks on stream said that playing Custodes was like “playing an army of heroes.” SOLD. So lets dive into my (little) experience and thoughts I’ve had on the Custodes thus far!
The Custodes ARE FUN!
Custodes are amazingly fun. Maybe specifically for me in that they are challenging and seem to reward a smart general at the list building level but also execution. With so few models there is NO room for mistakes and even so you will find yourself in almost all games with some real challenges. This isn’t to say they are “bad” or “weak” but with so few models finding their spots to shine isn’t so overt. When I play with Custodes I feel like I am being clever or pulling off something really cool.
True to 8th edition the Custodes codex is full of things you want to play but could never fit into one list. I’ve experienced this with all my armies but perhaps more so with Custodes. Terminators OR bikes are the real diverting path but Wardens seem fun, Trajan is a beat-stick.. you get the idea. To make matters worse we got confirmation AND the beta rules that some of those gorgeous FW models will be coming over to 40k for the Custodes.. namely the Dread with the giant spear, YES!
Custodes are fast, hard hitting and durable in an edition where that doesn’t EXACTLY mean the same thing it once did in 7th (is that a bad thing?) but they got it all. Yes, they are an elite army and the challenges with that are true but these gorgeous models (and they are VERY PRETTY) are super fun and definitely viable for competitive play.
Custodes are Meant to be Allied: Winning at the List Building Phase
Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat: Stop list shaming Custodes players who mix, take other detachments or don’t particularly feel like running ONLY Custodes. Is this a bit self-serving? Yeah! I will probably never take pure Custodes because I like giving myself the best chance to win while playing with models I love (Nids, Ad Mech, Custodes, Knights etc). This codex was written with a LOT of synergistic combos intended. Custodes make great.. guardians for things like Guard, Ad Mech and other imperial soft belly factions. They need their giant golden men!
I think virtually every serious Custodes list will include roughly 300 points of guard. The extra battalion, bodies and the ability to farm up command points with the warlord trait (grand strategist) and the relic (kurov’s aquila) is too much of a complement to what the Custodes lack / want to pass up. Beyond that you can plug and play your own flavor. I like Assassins because they again are tactically fun but also allow me to reliably grab some objectives and keep me scoring on the ITC mission while the Custodes bash faces. Honestly though you can go MORE guard, Ad Mech with like dakka bots or onagers OR you can go full on Custodes. A small terminator squad with some bikes is fun or you can have a sick 1, 2 punch of “arriving from the golden light” with Terminators or bikes then following it up with a homer beacon of a block of guard or wardens through the Vexilia deep strike stratagem.
Custodes are new and the combos you will see with them is limitless. People are also talking about taking a supreme detachment of shield-captains on bikes and plugging in 5 of those bad boys into an otherwise normal imperial list.
My Experience With Them
To finish up I want to just give a personal testimony that I have LOVED my time with them so far and I am eager for more. Custodes play like bad asses and have some of the most fun stratagems I have ever seen. The “swooping” one for bikes where you can charge in your opponents charge phase has made for some really really fun counter play but also given my opponents pause on their decision making. With my Custodes battalion I find that I am really getting a kick out of the 3 units of 3 Guard that I run. These guys are the basic troops and I just run them with spears but I’ve had a squad survive a re-rolling dev squad unleashing everything on them and I’ve had two guys solo a Space marine captain with a shield and hammer (easily). The shooting is as people have said, not impressive. Unless they are shooting at tough 3 or screening units.. with all the accuracy and sheer volume of bolter fire they can unleash you will mow down the small stuff. My Custodes collection is large and I have everything so I am particularly excited for league play with them where I can most effectively mix in elements that I normally wouldn’t play but am eager to see on the table.
Well, that does it for now. Just a quick write-up on what I have experienced with these big beautiful golden men of the emperor. If any of you are enjoying them or have some thoughts let us know. I am super stoked and cannot wait to get more games in!
And remember, Frontline Gaming sells gaming products at a discount, every day in their webcart!
Nice
How do you feel about the beta rules so far?
Tbh? I am thinking they are weak. They are CLOSE with the spear dread but it’s just not as survivable as some of their other elements and it isn’t inexpensive. It’s a GORGEOUS model and I think it does some things well like having decent ranged anti armor but it is just too expensive and lacks the ability to get that 4++ that makes custodes so attractive. Yes you can DS it but that won’t be enough for how expensive it is imo.
The other units are a bit meh. The transport is way too expensive for 6 models and the tank is nice but again lacks the durability that you’d need to justify it in a custodes list.
The good thing is they explicitly said they want feedback so right now the stuff is sitting on the too weak side for me.. maybe some more durability and a point reduction? Then we cooking with golden fire.
Yeah I thought they were weak too.
My feeling was they wanted to start on the weak side and dial it right with feedback. Guess they were worried about being overpowered as well as underpowered.
The Achillus and Caladius both seem on the right track, just a bit short.
The all have good models so everyone wants a way to put them on the table.
Galatus will likely be the tanky dread, Achillus is an upsized guardian spear whereas the Galatus is an upsized sword and board.
As a point of reference, the achillus is 15 points cheaper than a GK Dreadknight grandmaster but has +1 S, +1 T, +1 move, better shooting and a vastly better melee weapon. He is -1 invul save and -1 attack as the only downside, additionally he is not a psyker.
Those are huge downsides, comparatively.
He also can’t deep strike, and i would say has a lot worse shooting. And the difference between a 3++ and a 5++ is pretty huge.
All of the FW ones are pretty badly overcosted.
The achilus can deepstrike through a stratagem however, and the GMDK can only gain a 3++ through a psychic power or a 2CP strat (otherwise he’s a 4++). The load out I compared only had the psilencer as a ranged weapon, add 30 points to the GMDK if you want to include the psycannon. The melee weapon of the achillus (no -1 to hit, and mortal wounds) well offsets his -1 attack. Furthermore, he is wounding most tanks and “big units” on a 2+ rather than the GMDK’s 3+, and is wounded by non-overcharged plasma (or auto cannons/any S7 weapon) on a 4+ instead of a 3+. So I’d say those downsides are more than offset, and if the achillus is over costed the GMDK is as well.
The GMDK does have to use a psychic power to get a 3++, but since it can cast that psychic power on itself (and still have another cast left for Smite), that really isn’t a big limitation.
The Achillus can DS through a stratagem, but since Custodes have a very, very limited pool of CP that’s not a trivial limitation.
In terms of melee weapons, the Greatsword is the typical Grandmaster loadout; it’s more accurate than the Achillus (hitting on 2s, rerolling 1s) and has the same statline everywhere but strength. Admittedly, wounding on 2s rather than 3s against big targets is certainly nice, but realistically it means that with the stat differences they hit about equally hard against a (non-Daemon) target with T6+, as the Grandmaster has more attacks with more accuracy.
If you’re comparing ranged weapons with only the Psilencer (which is never how anyone runs the GMDK, but we’ll ignore that for the moment) I would still say it has superior firepower. While S4 AP0 is unimpressive, the d3 damage on the Psilencer is far more powerful than most people give credit for and against most targets the Psilencer will have better numbers than the Achillus’s guns, especially thanks to its improved accuracy from the reroll 1s.
The GMDK is a reasonably quick model with excellent survivability (2+/3++) and the ability to drop in, put out a significant amount of shooting, and then go for an assault. An Achillus can’t really threaten things with its shooting and can only DS in with a non-trivial CP cost in an army that really wants to be saving CP for other stratagems. The GMDK also fill a needed HQ slot, whereas the Achillus does not fill any mandatory slots.
As a point of reference, the GK grandmaster dreadknight is 15 points more expensive than the achillus but has -1 S, -1T, -1 move but +1 A and +1 invul. The Achillus also has better shooting at that price and a much better melee weapon but isn’t a psyker. So, I don’t think it’s that far off for an initial price estimate.
Love em!
I’ve been having tons of fun pairing them with sisters.
oh sisters would be sick! Lots of strong anti armor in a sisters list and they are fairly mobile too. I like that combo. What kind of lists you running?

Hey Geoff. I’ve been putting Custodes units through the ringer, both theoretically and by applying them to games.
I’ve found the Bikes to be fantastic, and I’m a fan of the Wardens with Axes ahead of regular Spear Custodes. I find them a lot more effective in dealing damage with their Str8 axes and 4 Base attacks each and they are able to engage anything in the game.
I’m building a Vanguard detachment based around 2 units of Wardens, a Vexillus Praetor and 5/6 bikes alongside a Shield Captain on bike. I think their performance might be worth sacrificing two Command Points for – especially when you can bring a Guard Detachment in support.
Anyways, That’s just my opinion thus far. We have many games ahead of us! Custodes are fun, and look incredible on the tabletop.
Now we need a re-jig of the Foreworld units. The Dreads are close to being useful, just need a few tweaks to points or Invul, but the Tanks are way over-costed – especially the Calidius (I really want one in my army regardless lol).
Anyways, these guys will be getting a lot of playtime as they are so easy to transport 😀
I liked the Grey Knights at their release because they made all the other Marines go “but we thought we are the most special!”
And then the Deathwatch gave them an existential crisis. “Are we truly the most special, favourite, shiny of all? They seem to get better toys, oh no.”
And now these guys just stomp on them all before the Primaris aren’t even done putting their pants on.
Also, their vehicles look like they’re out of Flash Gordon and I mean that in the best way. Don’t even care for golden armoured bricks for dudes but I kinda want to start an army just for those wonderful retro vehicles. They are so cool.
Great writeup, iNcontroL. You’re making me want to start this army, just like you made me get into War Convo in 7th. 🙁
ONE OF US! 🙂
lol, same here. That’s how I got into 40k to begin with. Looked up armies. Looked up recent results for some. Saw his WarCon win and got AdMech (as I really liked how techpriests look)
awesome to hear <3
great writeup but i hate how this is simply by your own admission just another imperial soup list that will have to shoehorn in imperial guard to make it viable (for the CP), and opening up guard for future nerfs to stop it. ( i play guard) and with the constant deserved nerfs they are in danger of becoming irrelevant if any more happen. Stand alone guard are not top tier anymore but still are great to shoehorn into other imperial lists, which most likely will lead to further guard nerfs (when will guard squads move to 5 points each?) and back to what we were in 6th and 7th editions, also rans.
Fine by me, I went to the Throne of Skulls Doubles here in the UK last week (I know, cut-throat tournament or what…) and there must have been one Guard player in at least half the teams there. I’m sick of having Guard mirror matches. I want my army to be niche again so I can hipster it up!
No “pure” army is top-tier competitive; all codices have strengths and weaknesses, and using allies to cover those weaknesses is a huge part of competitive play. IG can easily be the “primary” part of an army just like SM, BA, CSM, etc, can.
The thing for me is that I can’t mind the soup lists. I can mind the effect it has on the game, like some unit choices from one Codex falling away since you can just use a clearly better option from another. But otherwise, I just don’t see Imperial armies fighting as “pure” as many players want. If I see a Space Marine assault squad as the tip of the spear for an otherwise just mobile Guard Army I think that absolutely feels like these would be used.
And for friendly armies, I feel like sometimes it is just a bit of a lack of imagination on the players’ side. If I have a small convent of Sisters allied to my army, that just would make sense depending there it happens. If I just take the living Saint though, say in an IG army, why not get the Old Macharius figure, get it all shiny and golden, a pair of wings on and here we are, our very own legendary guard commander turned living saint. I think he even got mentioned as one sometimes someplace but I could be wrong.
Just don’t overdo it, I saw a wonderful Eldar army with converted high elf “Eldar Ghosts” for demon summoning and then GW just took the toys away.
Nothing to admit here mate.. I made a section specifically asking people to not list shame. Wanting your guard to be special snowflakes that people don’t ally with is.. odd. When I see nids with guard through GSC not even a small part of me feels territorial about it. Custodes were specifically meant to be an allied faction. It’s all over the codex.. if any army asks you to put those feelings aside it’s the golden men.
What if I want my golden boys to be just total dicks who refuse to work with anyone, though? Like that weird antisocial kid who always worked on projects alone because he smelled like old hot dogs and talked about torturing cats?
This actually frustrates me. Because no mono-faction is actually competitive (maybe blood angels?) it really bothers people like me who are curious about competitive 40k but feel all the time like I have to subvert my own morals and “give in” to making min/max soup lists in order to do it. I wrestle with myself constantly because it feels dirty, like I’m selling out (that’s the best way I can put it) by mixing armies instead of playing them pure, or worse (IMHO) doing the sort of blatant min/maxing you tend to see in the lists featured here (like taking a bunch of units with no upgrades just to fill out a battalion). It feels dirty, it feels wrong. it feels like it’s missing everything that makes 40k worth playing as a game compared to the myriad of better games out there as far as actual rules go. And I don’t know how to reassure myself it’s okay without it feeling like justifying the bad behavior.
Mate, if you feel like picking the best option is “bad behaviour” you will not be happy in competitive 40k and should seriously look at other ways to enjoy your hobby. Because I’ve seen people with that sort of priorities (and no judgement if they’re bad or not) trying to dip a toe in the scene and just get incredibly frustrated. The scene will not adjust to you and the way high-end armies are built will not adjust to your ideas.
Well one of the things I am trying to do is figure out why I am having such a hard time approaching 40K in that style. 40K is the only game where I feel this way all the other games I have played I had no problem separating the background from the actual gameplay. But with 40K it feels like I would be doing something unethical to treat it with that approach and I honestly am not sure how to get out of that mindset.
Okay, don’t take this wrong but if you use a word like “unethical” for taking something like allies you reaaallly and I mean reaaaaaaaaally do not want to try this scene. I mean first of all I don’t get it because the fluff ain’t about clean cut armies but I’ve met the purist faction before and I guess its a psychological thing about wanting clean cut order or something. You won’t just be unhappy you’ll also think everyone else is being unethical and doing something wrong with won’t make you happy and it sure as f.. won’t make the people who have to deal with it happy.
Yeah, if you feel like optimizing armies is “bad behavior” and is selling out, you probably don’t want to play competitively. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you don’t need to force yourself to play in a way you don’t enjoy.
You certainly can play within limits of your choosing, whatever those may be. But you need to be aware that you’re handicapping yourself by doing so- and it’s not fair to expect everyone to share in that.
Just to tag in here btw.. I also disagree with the notion that in order to win at all in competitive WH40k you need to have a mixed list. You can easily take a single codex of nids, eldar, spacemarines, daemons, csm etc.. and do just fine. If you are wanting to “get into competitive 40k” and are looking to be uber top tier right off the bat.. I’d ask you probably change your perspective. Is some of the better armies mixed detachments and allies? Yep.. can you go to a tourney and take a single codex and do well? Yes.. yes you absolutely can.
Right I get that, I’m trying to figure out how to get out of the mindset that it’s “unethical” (that’s the best word I can think of, it’s really hard to describe) to do things that you see competitive 40k players do. Even within a single codex, it’s hard to get out of the mindset of “Just take lots of X”, that’s what I struggle with. Like for example, my main army is death guard. Taking 9 crawlers or like 100 poxwalkers feels almost as bad as taking brimstone horrors or chaos soup, and that’s still within one codex.
Basically, I’m trying to figure out how to lessen the concept of “It has to fit the fluff”, because as I said before 40k is the only game I’ve played where I have this much hesitation to do it; when I played warmachine, had no issues separating fluff from rules. When I looked at X-wing, and Infinity, and Malifaux, and Kings of War, same thing; it was very easy to separate the background material and look at building lists that were “good”. It’s just Warhammer (this counts for AOS too) where I have this gnawing feeling that I can’t just separate the two and play the game optimally without it feeling dirty and ignoring 30 years of history.
Games Workshop are just let’s call it uniquely skilled when it comes to translating concepts into rules. It is not your fault and shouldn’t be your job to adjust for that.
@wayniac:
I dunno man >_< That is a odd place to get locked up for me. You aren't alone.. many feel as you do so it definitely isn't really bad that you think this way. But like.. the fluff? What exactly is odd in fluff terms with having Custodes, Guard and other imperial factions working together? It's actually very much so in the fluff.. or spamming units upsetting the fluff bunny in you? What? Most of the fluff is just tac marines killing everything so O_O you forge that narrative if you like mate but I'm gonna be making pew pew sounds and staring lovingly at my dudes on bikes.
The game asks you to make your own fluff but honestly.. if you are talking about competitive gameplay and how mixed detachments or spamming upsets you.. competitive play is not for you as has been said a bunch already.
InControl has a point here. The Marine Army, in theory, has a nice variety of units that SHOULD work together to form a greater whole (I can’t remember any edition in which it actualy worked like that but you know. It is a nice idea).
But I just gulped down 3 more Heresy novels and honestly I feel like It is Tac Marines with no support all the time. If vehicles happen it goes right to Titans legions and/or allied Mechanicum. It has been a while since I read 40k novels but I can’t remember things like Land Speeders or Razorbacks showing up a lot.
I think its the right time GW teach Primaris space marines how to jump into old transports. Cawl could find a cure to the gene degeneration.
Humans don’t drive Hobbit cars *ducks*
Now I want to see some Intercessors piled into a Smart 😉
That is the most natural thing to want to see. I mean I didn’t know I want to see it till you said it but I’m sure that is how it works for everyone.
Custodes are the best. Soooooo cool.
Custodes are incredibly fun and also much stronger then many people might think.
There are some point issues though that could lead to a future failed adjustment if only one or two units are nerfed.
Meaning..
Jetbikes are a little too good, they ought to be upped in points.
But if a future CA does that it will miss the mark since at the same time allarus terminators are a little to expensive for what they do and the landraider is significantly to expensive, not in a vacuum but in a custodes army since they will ever only going to afford one of these meaning that it wont last two turns vs a “normal” competitive army bringing their “normal” amount of long ranged anti tank.
The option for a LR custodes build really is absent due to the cost of them, taking two (utilizing the LR strategem) is pretty much out of question.
A third unit that needs to be rebalanced is the stock codex contemptor. This one is very overpriced to the point of never being taken if efficiency needs to be prioritized.
A perfect custodes internal balance would see a little of everything being used but as it is jetbikes are to cheap, contemptors the opposite and the rest of the infantry is a just a wee little bit to expensive mostly due to relying on heavy CP usage.
If any CA changes are to be had then some minor point alterations across the board would be nice, however I fear they will slap down hard on just the jetbike because everyone and their kitchen sinks keep throwing in hordes of jetbike captains into all kinds of soups and only nerfing the jetbike will hurt the custodes codex to much without counter buffs.
Also all the retooled FW-to-8th units are way to expensive (as always). The grav carrier can be how awesome it wants on paper but when your army is built around ONE you are pretty much playing an auto loose game vs anything competitive since it wont last past turn one-two.
Lets see if gw will take heed of the feedback and lower the FW-8th point costs accordingly to something that can actually be used in a competitive game.
Something tells me that if eldar jetbikes and reapers are nerfed into some sort of sanity instead of what they are today we might see the next winner be something with a few jetbike shield captains thrown in, what is basically flying imperial deamon princes on steroids are simply too good to not use.
All in all, seldom enjoyed so much fun with a codex like the custodes. Hell..I´m actually so happy with them that I for once dont even care about trolling around in here 😛
I don’t know if the bikes are too cheap, the units just perform many functions standard Custodes can’t, they carry our most point efficient anti-armour, they are our best Horde management, and in a slow ass army, they are fast as hell.
The problem is they do a bit of everything, which makes them just a better selection than most units…
The Shield Captains on Dawneagles will still most likely end up in everyone and their brothers list, even if he went up in points, the only army it would hamstring would be the Custodes in a “pure format”.
He is 180pts for a 5++ and seven wounds. He hits relatively (though no exceptionally) hard in melee and is fast, but he folds up like a sack of wet paper towels when people actually start attacking him. And while the Hurricane Bolter is nice, I think that units like the BA/SM Captain with Jump Pack bring a lot more utility and durability- that 3++ makes a pretty big difference, as does Dmg3 on their weapon.
The trick is if he is in custodes detachment he gains the emperor chosen ability. Every unit has the aegis of the emperor for 5++ and for a pure custodes detachment u gain +1(up to max 3++) with the emperor chosen ability.
If he is your warlord u can give him the warlord trait Superior creation Feel no pain on 5+ and u can give him the relic Auric aquilas for the 3++ inv save instead his native 4++.
Than he is a beast for 180 points, 7W 6T 2+ 3++ and FnP 5+ and character. At lest until your dice doesnt fail u :).
Sure, but in order to get most of that- the 4++ invuln, or the relic, or the warlord trait- you need to take him in a “pure” detachment, which means taking other Custodes units (or more Shield Captains, which won’t benefit from most of the rules/abilities you mentioned.) And the Captain himself has no innate synergy with other parts of an Imperial soup army. His stats are a bit better than a regular Space Marine on a Jump Pack or Bike, but not to an exceptional degree- and his weapon is in most ways worse than the Thunder Hammer that those characters would carry, not to mention the 3++ they will have over him without needing to burn a relic slot.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the Shield-Captain on Bike is _bad_ or anything, but I’m not sure I feel he’s a breakout character that is going to see extensive use in other armies. I think he’ll be yet another “fast, tough, fairly hard-hitting” character that Imperial armies can run, but they already have access to a lot of different versions of those and I’m not sure the Custodes have anything really outstanding to offer in that regard.
Exactly. We will see jetbikes in every single soup possible till the point of gw nerfing them but that will only hurt the custodes codex whos only really good unit is the jetbike.
What’s up with your Tyranid radio silence Geoff? Or have I perchance missed your LVO recap? Would love to hear about that, and your thoughts about Tyranids, post-LVO.
