Astra Militarum Regiment Tactics & List: Mordia

Locked step, boots and buttons polished, let’s go to war! For Mordia!! And Check the Tactics Corner for more great articles!

Hey Guys and Girls, this is BigVik back again with the last in my series of articles exploring list builds for the new Astra Militarum Codex!

This time we’ll be exploring the Mordian Iron Guard. These guys walk lock step into battle in full dress uniform. They have some of the most disciplined soldiers in the Imperium, and no wonder when their planet homes one of the most prestigious Schola Progeniums, the places they train Tempestus Scions and Officio Prefectus Commissars!

From a rules perspective, if you want to dive back into the rules for the Mordian Iron Guard, I recommend you look back at Reece’s articles, Astra Militarum Review Part 1, and Part 2.

Now let’s dive into the list!

What the list does:Does this seem like a tide of bodies? Because it definitely is. This list does something similar to the Valhallan Ice Warriors list, but does it in a more infantry centric manner, how so? While the Valhallan List used a tide of bodies to keep your opponent away from your tanks, this list uses the tide of bodies to keep ITSELF alive. We all remember the line from Dawn of War right? “It’s a Space Marine! SWARM’IM!!” And that’s exactly what this list does. This will be a massive onion in the middle of the table that your opponent has to unravel, or else you will simply plink them to death with the myriad bucket of dice style shots. While this makes the list somewhat vulnerable to being assaulted, the Mordians themselves mitigate this to some degree with their doctrine and stratagem both improving the efficiency of the army’s over watch, making this army quite scary in every portion of the round, potentially even on your opponent’s

What Relics to take: This list definitely want the the outflank dagger to move units around, as this will decrease the predictability of your army, and potentially make your opponent over react to the units which pop out of the wrong board edge, early game.

What the Strengths are: The shear number of bodies in this list makes it difficult to deal with, it can take up a LOT of the table, and it isn’t particularly dependent on support to stay alive, since there aren’t likely to be enough BULLETS in your opponent’s army to deal with this kind of list.

What the Weaknesses are: This list’s strength is also its greatest weakness, the tide of MSU. A savvy opponent will simply shoot the most dangerous units down, and whittle the rest of your army down as it becomes relevant. This means that running your army every which way may be a viable tactic except if you’re on a round timer, in which case you’ll never reach past turn 3, and probably do badly on progressive missions.

Well this is my take on the Mordian Iron Guard, if a lot of these lists seemed a little samey it’s because I was the one building all the lists. I have a favorite set of load outs for my Leman Russes and infantry squads based on my metric sheet I’ve mentioned in previous articles. Keep in mind that you can hot swap a plasma gun for a flamer if your meta has a lot of GEQ swarm, or assaulty armies where that plasma gun won’t get to shoot enough times to justify its points investment.
