Chapter Tactics is a 40k podcast which focuses on promoting better tactical play and situational awareness across all variations of the game. Today PeteyPab and the best Space Marine player in last year’s ITC season Thomas Hegstrom Oakey delve into the Imperium 1 Index again and cover Dark Angels, Space Wolves, and Blood Angels
QOTD: What are the best units in the Imperium 1 Index?

Please do not send an army list in a format such as Army Builder, send them in an easy to read, typed format. Thanks!
Best units?
Easy, whatever is the cheapest platform for bolter/stormbolter spam or whatever can avoid hordes the best, that is flyers. Pretty boring but there it is.
The interesting thing is why dont anybody seriously talk about which one are the worst, most useless units in index imperium 1? Dont we all want to make 8th even better?
Do people still think having units or army themes shelved for another decade is fun?
Hey, I’ve got a rules question and I thought maybe this was as good a place as any to ask.
What’s the intention with multiple weapon squads in the following scenario:
1. I declare that I’m shooting a unit where I can only see one of the models. Normally the rulebook says you can even kill people you can’t see as long as you can see one of the models.
2. Let’s say I have a lascannon and a bunch of bolters.
3. If I roll for the lascannon first and it kills the only guy I see can I still roll out all the bolters as well?
I thought you could but I wanted to ask what other people thought…
I believe you declare all your targets at once, so you would be ok.
Hey threllen,
The way I’ve been playing it is: choose your unit with multiple weapons. then choose their target, in this case the unit you can only see a couple models in. Then resolve each weapon, the wounds can been allocated wherever in the target unit. Continue til you’re completely done with your unit even if you can’t see models after some attacks are resolved. The reason I believe it works this way is once your unit has targeted a unit you don’t return to the ‘choosing a unit’ step which is where line of site is required. I could be wrong of course.
Different extension on that question then, what if models are removed so that the bolters, in this example, are out of range
Would the bolters still be able to shoot?
Good question! And I think even though it’s super weird, yes they would.
Absolutely want to hear a unique episode for Deathwatch, Grey Knights, etc as they seem like almost entirely separate armies from “Codex” Marines, even given the differences present in BA, DA, SW and, I think, require very different playstyles and/or models. Love the podcast, keep it up.
What did the guest mean by “Sicarius is good but you have to build the list around him. Tactical marines are good if you build the list around them. But they have to work together.”
What exactly did he mean? Should a list of this kind use a lot of razorbacks, or go foot with apothecary standard bearer? Or something else altogether?
I would take a look at this list. He basically means you need to build around a mobile foot infantry army. Not a lot of heavy weapons, some melee weapons, some special weapons, and a lot of bodies.
Thanks!
If you guys get a chance to talk a bit more in depth about this in the future, it’d be great!
Does anyone else find it problematic that the best way to use this codex seems to be without Marines???
Guilliman is a marine…
The biggest one of all, for sure! But where are his children? Busy rebuilding Ultramar?
Kinda suprised about the evaluation of the wulfen.
Yeah i see how its worth a lot that they can buff other units, and they kind of got more resilient… BUT do to the general shift of the new edition their weapon choices nerfed. That together with their reduction of attacks does not make them as viable in cc as they used to be. In many of my games they bounced off the opposing units… terminators (not specifically equipped for cc), harlequins etc. … for them you need high wound targets (monsters, vehicles) that cant hit back as much.
To me it appears that they are talkin about theory hammer and havent played as much (the wulfen). Simply by looking in the codex i was als impressed at first….
Excellent episode. Question, where do friends meet up online to have productive tactical discussions. Dakka tends to turn into bickering once a thread has gone on too long, and I didnt see much going on on the frontline facebook (makes sense, its marketing not a tactical site primarily). Maybe you said it on the ep and i missed it
Would be great if you could make your podcasts shorter, I find it hard to find time to listen to a two hour podcast. If you could find a way to fit 75% of the current content into 45-60 mins that would make it a lot more accessible.
