Chapter Tactics is a 40k podcast which focuses on promoting better tactical play and situational awareness across all variations of the game. For this episode PeteyPab offers up his meta predictions and thoughts on the new edition and gets Reece and Frankie to spill the beans on what they think the top lists will be and how they plan on dealing with them.
QOTD: Which new list archetype is the best in 8th? Shooting Spam, Vehicle Rush, MSU Assault, Hordes, or Alpha Strikes?

Please do not send an army list in a format such as Army Builder, send them in an easy to read, typed format. Thanks!
Not a single word about AdMech in the entire podcast?
FeelsBadMan
They have some strong vehicle rush lists.
I played some admech over the weekend and have watched them played elsewhere. I don’t think they can be all 2000 points of a list and be good. Too many of the units are stinkers. Kataphrons, rangers, and vanguards are kind squishy shooting units that don’t really shoot that hard and struggle to survive. For their cost, they just don’t have enough durability. Dragoons are significantly weaker now that vehicles have armor saves. But some of the admech units are superstars.
All Onagers are very good. Cawl is very good. Tech priests are even good if you can keep them behind your onagers. Robots have a place but depend greatly on the terrain. The staff priests are the most damaging powerlevel-for-powerlevel combat unit in the game … if they manage to get into combat somehow.
Overall I think you will see more Cawl/Onager firebases allied into other imperium armies with a splash of admech infantry.
I disagree pretty strongly =) AdMech are exceptional. Dragoons are amazing, a great assault unit. Rangers and Vanguard are a bit squishy but with canticles can be surprisingly tough for a low points investment and have excellent damage output.
You can go all AdMech are rock people, IMO. We found them to be very, very good.
Stoked to try Psychic lists.
PeteyPab, love the content, but you are killing me with the runny nose in this episode. Keep in mind most folks are listening on east buds, so your sniffle is direct in the ear. Again, I would be writing this if I didn’t like the cast, but please take some breaks to blow your nose and edit it out, but even if you don’t, it would be preferable to this. Please keep up the good work and feel better
Thanks for the advice! Was this during the the interviews or before? I did record the intro in a hotel room at 5am. I may very well have just had morning allergies. Anyways I will be more mindful in the future.
You were also In Sacramento, the worst place in all the world for Allergies, I felt for you Man
Great podcast, I really enjoyed it.
I’m surprised no one mentioned the idea of an “Imperial Soup” list in the podcast. I’ve definitely heard Reece or Frankie mention something about that in the past. Seems pretty easy to combine the best units from Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, Guard, etc…and make a devastating list.
Any thoughts or input as to what that would look like? Maybe a little combination of vehicle spam, Guilliman, some MSU assault from Blood Angels/Wolves, and one or two Sisters of Battle units all in the same list?
Good question! I had “Imperial Soup” in my notes but don’t know if I mentioned it.
I don’t think anyone has cracked the code yet, but I imagine when they do it is going to be a devastating list.
From the Primaris booklet at p. 18, “when building a battle-forged army, all models in the same detachment must be drawn from the same Chapter.” That would seem to somewhat limit the Imperial Soup approach, at least within a single detachment.
Got some tips for Space Marines players? Particularly those who are playing Chapters other than UltraMarines?
Like:
Missile Launchers vs Las Cannons vs Heavy Bolters vs Plasma Cannons (Devastators)?
Rhino vs Razorbacks vs Foot mobile?
Thunderfire Cannons?
Land Raiders?
Tanks in general?
Thanks Brother Sgt Pab!
Space Marine Tank rush could be powerful. Predators come in dirt cheap for their wound count (as do Land Raider Crusaders).
Another thing I have seen is Assault marines with Shrike. They make very good disruption units, and I imagine combined with a powerful firebase can really do work
I was leaning towards Vanguard Vets over Assault Marines. Power Weapons and Storm Shields would let them do a lot more work than bolt pistols/chainswords.
Assault Cannon Razorback spam with plasma gun Tacticals?
What about using land speeders as a mobile firing platform? Typhoon+HB is 140 points or 420 for Heavy 9 S5 Ap -1 and Heavy 6 S8 AP -2 D d6 or Heavy 6D6 S4 Ap 0… that’s a lot of anti-horde dakka with some decent anti-multiwound damage as well.
Great to have such grand horizons for the podcast. It’s exciting times indeed.
To be fair, this podcast made me terrified of triple knight lists lol. All my theory-hammer went to that after and…the numbers are scary.
I’m very curious to see if ITC goes forward with side boards or not.
28th for the podcast, looking forward to more.
Guys Have you tested the 200 Conscripts with Harker, Commisar and 3 Manticores and HellHammer? That army is insane and with 600 shots the Conscripts can heavily damage even a Knight! And then they conscripts just fall back and shoot you some more (orders). And the army is basicly immune to Psychology (killing one conscript is nothing). Oh and snipers dont work as you hide your characters behind the Hellhammer… What were you thinking? 😀 I know you guys dont like unkillable deathstars and thats good, but instead you created unkillable army (who has so many shots to kill the 200 bodies?? Ork horde MAYBE?)
Happy to see Chapter Tactics return!
(Sorry if my comment does like, a weird sextuplet post, none of my other post attempts are working.)
Glad the cast had returned, haven’t heard much about any of the other traitor legions outside the guard aligned ones and as an iron warrior player I’m starting to feel like the red haired step child again! . Any chances out there the rest of us CSM are going to Beatle to keep our fluffy and potent lists?
Hey Guys, 1 question are u Guys Talking about wraithknight or imperial knights at the Podcast?
Mostly Imperial Knights but Wraithknights are also very good.
As someone who lives in Sacramento, I am assuming you took a vacation here so you could be reminded of how great you have it living in San Diego. I really enjoyed the podcast, they keep getting better.
Any insight on Genestealer Cults?
Tau OP, 9 commanders w/ missile pods and 80 gun drones, if you can squeeze a culexus that could be good
