This is what I was wondering about as well. The exalted flamer weps are heavy and they don’t have relentless, so they are snap firing if they move, which means they can’t even flamer, just the d3 lascannon shots on 6s.
I suppose he uses them to sit in the middle and control it while the MSU screamers do scoring and they divide up the board.
Still, I’m sure it can be optimized by getting rid of the exalted flamers.
Presumably he’s using the Exalted Flamers to save points, since they are about half the price of a Pink Horror squad. But I don’t feel like the benefits of taking that many guys who aren’t contributing a ton are great given all it really does is unlock the Daemonic Incursion detachment.
I suppose having the Flamers detach in the middle of the board and start shooting on their own is an option once you hit the midgame? Still feels awkward, though, since you basically can’t turbo-boost while they’re attached and once the Screamers (and psychic buffs) are gone, they’re pretty fragile.
For those wondering about the Exalted Flamer deathstar – it is AMAZING area denial. Charge it – 9 D3 S6 AP3 from wall of death, or if you get Forewarning 9 D3 S10 AP2 at full BS. With that many screamers it is a force to be reckoned with in CC, and if you roll Misfortune it gets even more nasty.
With 18″ range on the “lascannon” shots, and torrent on the flamers, you can plop this mid table, or slightly more aggressively into opponents deployment, and (until you fail Grimoire) be relatively impervious to anything other than stomps, while denying a huge amount of movement and scoring potential, and your Screamers from the Skyhost corrupt objectives all over the table.
With that said, this list does have a major shortcoming – if you fail Grimoire, or play too aggressively with the screamers, you just lose… In general, the list was an experiment for ETC as a counter-Tau list, and in testing it was quite good at it… until it failed Grimoire… so it got set aside for something better 😐
Do you guys really play with you can ignore the -1 from failing the grimoire and just take a 4+? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone play it that way.
What time was that at? Definitely a mistake if it happened. Both players are well aware of the penalty for failing!

I believe he just said that if he does fail, he would be able to cast forewarning from divination.
Forewarning would still suffer the -1 penalty from Grimoire, though.
You’re right. I assume it was just a brain-fart then; not really any possible reading of the rules that would allow it.
I mean, it does at least improve their save to a 5++ at that point, but since you can Jink for a 4+ cover it’s not _that_ important.
I’m more weirded out by running 9x Exalted Flamers together. They can’t really move and shoot, so it feels odd to bring them with the Screamers.
