Hey Reece, concerning the stacking of the boon table rolls from the Word Bearers detachment and the chaos warband formation, is that stated in the book?
The reason i’m asking is because in the Chaos warband formation rule in the Traitor’s Hate book it is stated that the model can only roll twice on the table AS A RESULT of the Champion of Chaos special Rule.
Looking at the Chaos Space Marine codex this rule only triggers when your character kills another character in a challenge, leading me to believe that the Chaos Warband rule won’t work for the Word Bearers detachment as this roll on the boon table isn’t caused by winning a challenge, thus not EARNED by the champion of chaos rule.
Fair enough, my thought proces was that on the champion of chaos rule, as written on pagge 28 of the csm dex, only allows you to get a roll on the boon table when you kill another character in a challenge.
Knowing that there are other ways to get rolls on the boon table (Warlord traits, Boon of Mutation), and the Chaos Warband formation specifically saying it has to be earned from the Champion of Chaos rule, it lead me to believe that this would only count when you kill another character in a challenge otherwise it would’ve just said “whenever you roll on the boon table”.
This could just me being very picky on words and terminology as a law student, but if i’m wrong i’m wrong haha!
(sorry for any grammar mistakes, english is not my native tongue)
Yea, i’m using the english version and yes it clearly states that “Whenever a character with the champion of chaos special rule kills an enemy character, you must immediately check to see if the Dark Gods reward him.”, but still that doesn’t take away from the point that you only get to roll on the boon table from the Champions of Chaos special rule when your character kills an enemy character. So you’ll only get to roll twice from the Chaos Warband formation rule when that happens, as it specifies that it must be earned through the Champion of Chaos special rule.
The roll on the boon table from the Word Bearers detachment (or the Warlord traits, tzeentch psychic power and/or Gift of mutation for that matter) isn’t triggered by the Champion of Chaos special rule, therefore not eligible for the double roll granted by the Chaos Warband formation. This seems very clear to me.
Don’t get me wrong, i’d love if the opposite is the case, because my chaos army is the Word Bearers legion, but from reading the rules multiple times this doesn’t seem to be the case.
Comparing with Traitor’s Hate, I’m going to have to agree with Ihaverabies. The Eight-Fold Path Rule for the Word Bearers Grand Host is missing the bit that the Black Crusade Detachment’s Path to Glory Rule has, specifically mentioning that it combos with Favoured Scions. The two are similar, but I’m pretty sure that Eight-Fold Path doesn’t give you the extra roll, nor does any other means of getting a roll on the Boon Table except for killing a Character and triggering Champion of Chaos.
I know there’s a lot of stuff to discuss with the legion rules, but I have something more important I want to bring up.
Why did the intro music for the podcast change?! I’m listeining on itunes and there’s a different music with random explosions. It’s so jarring! I miss the old music, please bring it back, this is definitely a downgrade.
Lots of flavour in the new book which is awesome! Likely not having any effect on the current meta though as it fails to address the issues with the core dex.
cost of the units. lack of wargear and options for certain HQ’s (dark apostle, warpsmith stuck walking for instance). but, mainly, the cost of the basic units.
Maybe some of the commenters didn’t get that thread traitor legion book relies on codex CSM? And fails to address the main problems with that book, as outlined above?
I can seriously see Alpha Legion showing up a lot at tournaments. With the Insurgency Force, you get 3-9 Infiltrating, ObSec, Shrouded units, on top of the other Shrouded/ObSec units in the formation. Generally speaking, Infiltrating ObSec is pretty good.
I’m guessing when all is said and done that Black Legion will be the most commonly used. A lot of the other stuff is fun and interesting, but can also be effective as a second CAD or ally.
Getting caught up, great show! Couple fluffish questions. Does this book mean we won’t see many homebrew chaos warbands or see people use chapters that fell post-heresy? Also, chaos is shown to have some factorums in the ultramarine book 3 and isn’t there a dark mechanicum? They may not have the resources of the Imperium so I get scavenging but surely they have some?
Are there any individual auxiliary options for the decurions? Such as spawn in the 13th Black Crusade detachment.
Yes. That and things like a single Heldrake.

I don’t see anything stating you have to win a challenge to trigger it, personally.

The English version, at least, does not require the kill to be in a challenge, only in close combat.

This might call for a FAQ, haha.

Sorry for the change up, Frankie had like 10 minutes to get the podcast posted. We’re doing a dozen things at once right now.

What do you think it fails to address?

I think some commenters didn’t read that this episode was about Traitor Legions, not the Chaos Codex from years ago…

Can’t wait to see these lists!

Dark Eldar players are moaning that some CSM get combat drugs… and can use them better than Dark Eldar for the most part.
Yeah…poor Dark Eldar =/
Just going to say, I am betting on Death Guard Biker spam.
ohh, how about 2d6 move, 3 inches to run +6 inches to charge with fleet for berserkers.
then… take a detachment with the aether tome thingy that grants a friendly unit the jump type.
so 2d6 +15 +2d6 +6 turn one. with fleet. so average, 7 +15 +9 +6. 36 inch average charge turn one……
Hot damn!!!
