Today’s episode is dedicated to all the TOs who have to deal with all the nuances of running a 40k event. Thanks guys for all the hard work you do!
I have enlisted the help of Canadian professional rules question troll Diogo Pita, and I am going to attempt to answer as many questions as correctly as he can. No matter how silly, or how rediculous. TOs have to deal with all kinds of situations and players, and this episode is going to attempt to show you how you can make the most of your 40k tournament experience, no matter what side you’re on. Also, how well do YOU know your rules? Tune in and find out.

Disclaimer: I do no pretend to be an expert on 40k rules, and the answers I made are all my own opinions and rulings on how I think TOs can safely answer the questions without ruining the fun of parties involved. Answering rules questions can sometimes be more of a circus balancing act, than a procedural law case.
Skip to 1:24:00 for tips to TOs looking to make their events more fun and better for their players! Or maybe for TOs who do not have a lot of experience in judging events.
Want to test your list checking skills? Guess how many mistakes are in this Ultramarines list I found online.

I am still taking your Genestealer Cult, and Deathwatch list submissions! Let’s see what you guys can brew up!
Do you think your list could hold up to the List Lab? Email it to…
-All of the Tactical Squads are the wrong price. The rhino-mounted ones should be 110 and the Pod-mounted ones 80.
-Devastators can’t take an Auspex.
-Assault Marines can’t take a Combi-Melta. Also, I think he calculated their price wrong?
-The Skyhammer Devastators didn’t pay for their Drop Pods.
That’s not fair. Marines aren’t used to paying for their transport options. You can’t expect them to remember that this stuff even has a póint cost.
Not gonna put anyone in the spotlight, but this was a list played at the top table at an event. The guy was never caught.
I think everyone should take the time through out the game to check different parts of their opponent’s list for legality.
Also, you forgot one thing Abusepupppy.
Well don’t leave me hangin’ brah.
The skyhammer annihilation force isn’t an auxiliary choice for the gladius
Isnt the Skyhammer Annihilation Force not part of the required Auxiliary for the Gladius?
Yeah, that would be the one. No actual Scouts in there or anything.
Firstly, the Skyhammer is not a valid auxiliary choice, so no free transports for the demi companies. so everything with a transport selected is incorrect.
Command Squad should be 175 including transport cost
Tactical Squads with Grav Cannons should be 145 including transport cost,
Tactical Squads with Meltas should be 115 including transport cost
Devastator Squads in the demi companies should be 175 including transport cost
Skyhammer Assault squads should be 95 points and have no access to combi meltas
Skyhammer Devastator squad with Multi Meltas ahould be 145, Heavy bolter version should be 125.
The main issue is that the Skyhammer Annihilation force is not a valid auxiliary for the gladius, which means nobody gets free transports. So everything with a transport is incorrect, The assault squads are incorrectly valued, as are the devastators as they wouldnt get free dop pods anyway.
Now the real question is, how did this person mess up so badly?
You can’t take a skyhammer as your aux in a ultras battle company.
your missing the aux formation. And if the skyhammer is the aux formation then that is also wrong
“I have enlisted the help of Canadian professional rules question troll Diogo Pita…” Nope, catch you next episode.
Yeah, uh, Diogo means well and all but I don’t think he’s a good guy to consult on your rules questions.
He is the BEST troll.
Not sure if you guys understood the episode, but anyways TOs have to deal with some of the hardest/dumbest questions and the questions I had him ask me are questions he felt TOs should be able to answer. The episode may come off as silly but it was actually intended to be practical.
Maybe if I posted a list of the questions it would help?
Also, you know if you don’t like the idea of me answering questions I did include an easy timestamp that skips them all and goes to some pretty solid tips on judging/TOing an event.
Lol
Agreed, this episode is more of an insult to TOs than a thanks. Skipped this ad unsuited to better control.what I download
*unsubbed
Really solid episode. Started listening to get my fill of Diogo’s troll juice, but stayed because it ended up actually being a quality chat.
Speaking as a TO, I have heard nearly all of these questions/issues before in actual games/events. None of these questions came from neckbeards, and none of them came from Diogo 😛
For the markerlight/Pirahna/assassin thing – ITC still has not fixed the wording of Invisibility. RAW (in the ITC FAQ) markerlights can _never_ boost ballistic skill (as Invis is a set value of BS1, which overrides all modifiers) when shooting at an invisible unit. Reece has confirmed several times that this is not the intent, but it has yet to be changed 🙂
Great podcast Petey! These are becoming my new fav content from FLG
Constructive criticism ahead:
I think these discussions are excellent; good humour, good content and good topics. However, having the questions brought up and answered prior to recording may add a level of polish. I assume the intent was to mimic the situation a TO would be in but there was a lot of time spent looking up information and clarifying questions.
I do understand Jace! I actually asked him which books I needed before hand and using that knowledge turned to the most contentious pages on the book. I also brushed up on my 7th BRB. Sadly, I don’t think the way the game is currently, a TO can accurately and quickly answer a rules question in a timed event. I wanted to showcase the frustration players and TOs go through to answer a question. I’ll try to be better next time.
Good episode, you should listen to the episode before you decide it is bad….
I’m not a TO, but as a new ITC player, I’m glad slow play came up. I used to have trouble speeding up my turns, but it’s getting easier the more I play. I’ve been using a method where each of my turns has to be 20 minutes or less, and if it hits 20 minutes, I need to speed up the rest of the turn, factoring in what phase I’m currently in. I did almost get called on slow play in an RTT last month, and probably would have if my opponent didn’t know me, and how green I currently am. I guess it’s a matter of knowing if they’re intentionally being slow or not. Case-by-case basis, and all that. Again, glad it was mentioned, because I’m actively trying to watch myself to be sure I don’t get called on slow play.
Also, on the subject of illegal lists, and not naming names, but there is something kind of hilarious that happened in my area this ITC season. Someone was using an illegal list for half a season, and even they didn’t know it. When they were called out on it, and then actually checked their list for legality, the facepalm was epic. They’re still playing in the ITC this season after fixing their list to make it legal, but the accidental cheating for half a season has become a running joke that they probably won’t live down. Let this be a warning: CHECK YOUR LIST THOROUGHLY!
