Age of Sigmar Learning League – Frankie’s First 25 Wounds

Hello all, Jason here to talk about the units Frankie chose for his first 25 wound Age of Sigmar Warband.

For those of you who are not aware, the FLG staff have decided to jump into the Age of Sigmar head first and start a 4 month learning league. The only modification to the current 4 page ruleset is the implementation of wounds being the list building tool at least until the organized play ruleset is released this summer.  You can read all about the league here.   I wanted to write a little bit about the models everyone has chosen for their warband and some of the reasons they chose them for their first 25 wounds.  Today we look at Frankie’s choices for his Fyreslayer warband.

First up we have Frankie’s Hero choice, the formidable Auric Runesmiter on Magmadroth!

This hunk of beef stew clocks in at 12 wounds and moves incredibly fast for a model of it’s size.  While it does have limited ranged attacks and is decent in assault with potentially 6 rend -1 damage 2 attacks per turn, the Magmadroth really shines as a mortal wound generating machine. It’s special rules Roaring Fyrestream, Lashing Tail, and Volcanic Blood all serve to deal extra mortal wounds to nearby enemy warscrolls, making it incredibly dangerous to low wound count units.  The Runesmiter himself primarily serves as a survive-ability buff for nearby Fyreslayer warscolls, with a couple of abilities that let them re-roll failed wound rolls which makes their damage output incredibly high.

For his remaining wounds Frankie chose a unit of 13 Vulkite Berzerkers.

The basic foot soldiers of the Fyreslayers, Vulkite Berzerkers pack quite a punch and are more resilient than their 5+ save implies.   Due to their special rule, Berserk Fury, the warscroll has a pseudo Feel No Pain ability where on a 6+ they ignore any wounds suffered or a 5+ if their unit had 10 or more models in it at the beginning of a phase.  No bad!  Frankie is taking them with a pair of Fyresteel Handaxes, which allows them to re-roll hit rolls, which combined with the Auric Runesmiter’s ability to have them re-roll wound rolls makes for a nasty unit in close combat.  He also has the option to arm some of them with Fyresteel Warpicks which don’t wound as easily as the two axes but have a rend -1 and allow those models to take a Bladed Sling-Shield which can be used to cause mortal wounds on the charge and give the models a 4+ save in combat. Not a bad option either way.

So there you have his first 25 wounds for his Fyreslayer list.  What do you think of his selections? Would you have taken anything different?
