List Review
I am eye balling Mechanicus. I’d like to keep it purely Martian with the exception Coteaz.
So the idea is to have everything on the table turn 1. The Unit of Dragoons would be out in front to occupy space. Dragoons’ have a 4″ base and unit coherency of 4″ between models allowing them to provide a 44″ screen for the army giving the army a 5+ cover save. On the first tirn I would have 8+ units on the table. With CotO O would ne able to get a 2+ cover save for the army turn 1. The Dragoons seem like they would provide really get assault or counter assault with 24 str 8 ap 2 attacks on the charge, amd easy str 10 with CotO.
I feel like the area occupation will cir down on maneuverable armies ability to get aroumd.
I am nor sure if I should go with 3 units of destroyers or drop one to beef up the skitarri units.

CtA allies?
Has been crushingly voted down, every time. But, you cling to the dream, JP! 😉
The wording was really confusing though, I bet most of the people who voted were mislead.
As I recall, the question was- “Should Come the Apocolypse Allies be allowed? Option 1- Yes Option 2- No”
I can’t understand the question even now, months later.
How is that confusing, lol?
Should CtA be allowed?
Yes
No
It, literally, couldn’t be simpler.
I am teasing you a bit, Jural, that was just really funny, buddy.
Pretty sure he was trolling.
I’m sure you’ll talk more about the poll results, but I’m happy to have the duplicate detachment limit dropped. It seemed so silly in comparison to what was possible with the combi-detachments.
Yeah, exactly. The community continues to evolve in the way they view the game and what it should be.
Gorgeous yellows on that knight!
Question: If you have a formation with different elements (such as an ork dread mob) does the formation elements all have to be placed as a group, or can each element be kept in reserves separately? (Like could I keep the 9 killa kans in reserve?)
Yeah, unless they are a single unit, you can reserve them all separately.
Thanks Reece!
NP!
Phew, my War Convocation with drop pods is safe
It indeed is!
All of these flip flops and running with the community are frankly ridiculous. Now don’t get me wrong, 40k screams out for a decent comp packet to make it a decent competitive game. But what amazes me is how much better and more organized the GT system is on the fantasy side compared to the much more popular 40k.
Please don’t take this wrong, as I appreciate the efforts and feel that they are needed. But what it comes off as is that you either aren’t sure how to appropriately comp the game, or that you are afraid to come out with your ruling and lay it out for everyone, and so instead you put it to these polls and then things that EVERYBODY knows need comped (like max scat bikes) pass by 1 vote because people want their Eldar and so we are left with it.
What the community so desperately needs is a version of what ITC and Sweedish Comp do (did) for Fantasy. We need a smaller group of mature, experienced TOs and top players to come together and hash out amongst themselves an appropriate comprehensive comp packet, then put it up for beta, and then release for use to the GTs. It’s really simple …. still we are waiting though …
Thanks for sharing your opinion, Todd, but I think you are working off a lot of assumptions here and not as many facts.
We are not at all afraid to make calls on rules, we do it all the time. However, we do not wish to impose our views on the entire ITC which is comprised of over 1,000 participants. We choose to make it a democratic system, and that has proven to be very popular. It works for the ITC, so we run with it. You may think Eldar Scat Bikes need to be nerfed, and many would agree with you, but the majority of folks in the ITC did not (which proves, objectively, that EVERYONE does not in fact think they should be nerfed). So, we go with it. Just because you do not like a majority ruling, does not mean the system is flawed.
As for having a council of people dictate to everyone how to play the game, sure, that could work. But, you will always have resentment about controversial rules calls that do not represent what the majority of people want. Here, we can show everyone what the majority wants, it makes decisions easier to accept. And, no council of decision makers has accomplished what we have with the ITC. So, to me, what the community needs is not people telling them what to do, but to decide for themselves and the evidence is there to support that.
Lastly, as I always say, if you think you have a better system, by all means, go and do it. If it is the better format, it will win out.
As much as I like to complain to Reece about the polls, I really resented Sweedish comp in Fantasy… It always felt like if you weren’t playing the same armies that were popular with the council that year, you got screwed.
Yeah, I tend to agree. I think Swedish comp worked for their system, but playing it in 40k wasn’t my cup of tea, either. I think letting folks choose their own path is the best way to appease the most players and give a system that represents what folks want.
I know this is probably never going to happen, but my ultimate goal would be for the people behind the ITC to just completely re-point every dex in the game. No rules changes, just re-point everything.
Considering how divided the community can get over things that seem obvious to me (2++ reroll nerf, etc) I’m sure it’d be met with cries of derision from all sides of the spectrum, however, I think it would be a worthy endeavor.
I think what Todd is going for is something I agree with: 40k *isn’t* balanced at all, yet no one is comfortable just house ruling the thing on a grand scale to BRING balance. ITC is probably the closest thing we’ve come to in terms of a 3rd party’s house rules becoming the de facto standard of the tournament scene, and I’d love to see it taken even further.
That’s just my pipe dream, but it’s a thankless task with lots of acrimony and bitterness that I can’t imagine anyone taking on. What you guys already do with ITC is great and probably feels thankless already.
You’re not alone in that, we get asked that a lot in private. We genuinely don’t want to change the game, but it has to be changed to be played in an organized setting. That’s just that way it is.
The future is an unknown though, we’ll see how things develop in time.
I wonder if there would be a way to also leverage computers to help with balance. It would require tons of data entry but if you could do something like a ladder system for units based on total numbers used and winning percentage and use that to raise or lower points. Like, every 3 months that no one uses Ogryns they drop by 1 pt… Or, conversely, every 3 months that sees widespread usage of scat bikes raises them. Or every year or so.
Yeah I’ve said before I wish GW would royally screw up so bad (age of the emperor or what have you) just so the FLG guys would have to dive all the way in to save the tournament scene. Be the heroes we need and all that! 😀
Every time someone says poll results I imagine a pole dance off between rawdog and keno khan lol
Lol!
OMG! That is something I will NEVER be able to un-imagine! Thanks! And my therapist thought PTSD was bad?!
Final set is done to “push it”
Clarify on self allies. Does this apply n
Only to allied detachments?
Or does this mean no double cad from same source?
Can you still run nids cad with nids leviathan?
It refers ONLY to the Allied Detachment. It cannot be the same Faction as the Primary Detachment. Listen to the podcast, or, watch the show and we explain it in depth. http://www.twitch.tv/frontlinegaming_tv/v/10047199
Yes can run nid cad with nid leviathan…. or two nid leviathan now (6 flyrants anyone?).
This applies only to the Allied Detachment formation, which specifically says in the BRB cannot be of the same faction as your Primary Detachment (the one your Warlord is drawn from)
7 flyrants and 11 mucolids, GO!
Surely this is what GW had in mind for ‘Nids all along, lol!
Is double cad possible now?
Yes.
Let’s consider allowing Nids to self-ally on the next poll? Not a big deal with multiple CAD’s and all the Nid dataslates, but considering the nerf to CtA, it’s appropriate for the one army that is only CtA.
Nids came out BETTER than they were. They lose access to the Allied Detachment, but can double down on any other detachment. That’s an improvement.
Yes, double CAD’s, or double HT spam lists are better than before… BUT the allied detachment opened up some fun lists when you don’t feel like 11 HT’s running around.
So as I said above- please consider this exception for the next rules review.
Agree, there’s no need to have self ally with the allied detachment any longer. And I was one of the more vocal folks lobbying for it last year.
You were not alone in that sentiment =)
I’m kind of sad to see duplicate detachments. I feel like a bunch of top table competitive lists will now be more defined by which formation they chose to double. IE “double harvest decurion,” “double skyhammer + whatever,” and “double firebase + whatever…” Just feels like that even though it technically gives more options, it will actually reduce variety. It won’t be every list in the top tables, but I feel it will be common enough to notice.
On another vote, I’m also sad to see tons of super heavies still slapped with the maelstrom penalty and made liabilities for their armies. I guess people still really really hate super heavies as a broad category rather than recognizing that many of them aren’t bad at all, either being costed somewhere around right or even horribly overcosted.
The rest of the votes I either had no major opinion or shared the opinion that won out, so fairly good turnout for me except for the above.
I actually don’t think it will happen as often as you may think with double Formations. I was worried about that, too at first. However, Frankie and I theory hammered it out extensively, and I honestly don’t feel that it will happen that frequently. We could be wrong, of course, but we’ll see.
You can bet a dollar you’ll see double Aspect Hosts. Actually, I bet that dollar. Care to take me up on it?
Awesome to have those charts, transparency is very important for democratic enterprises! And everyone playing in the ITC events will know well beforehand what they’re needing to do, which relieves some stress that the tournament scene gives so many of us 🙂
Yes, agreed. Transparency is critical for these to have meaning. Folks need to know the numbers.
Good solid changes all around, and not just because I mostly voted that way! The only thing I’m a little bummed out about is that ranged D remains over nerfed (IMHO).
I am hoping there is a follow up. The poll results make it seem unclear if people wanted the D nerf or not. Based on the results of the second question, it would appear that people want more powerful D. I’m guessing people misunderstood the question and may have been voting on Nerfed vs RAW, instead of Nerfed vs Slightly Less Nerfed.
Im fine with No more cheaper Russes. Not having to take them in the Heavy slot is the pay off.
For me personally, Im happy it went this way. Screw Wraith Knights
Oh, and interesting question- do Dark Angel characters with bikes get both Deathwing and Ravenwing special rules, or does Deathwng replace Ravenwing?
As I recall, one of the HQ choices doesn’t even get a bike option, and perhaps Samael gets both RW and DW, but he’s unique in the Codex?
Samuel gets all the rules a deathwing character gets without actually having the deathwing rule

Free the D Reece (let’s make it a bit stronger)
Hey Reece – how can you use Heavy bolter Rapiers in a Space Wolf army? (58:31)
Also, When is the question going to be back of banning all range d again?
I want that.
that will never be a question again because, …Eldar :D. you can’t just take out iconic units to an army.
Im sorry, but a flamer shouldnt be able to take out a tank like that.
All you will be doing is nerfing two units. the Wraiths. take them back to their old profiles.
To be honest though, they die so quickly, a 3+ is very easy to get through and they only have a single wound, and if you can destroy their transport it often makes them useless.
Also with the previous statement, you can’t just invalid entire units, at least that is not what they are trying to do with the ITC. Also they serve a purpose, they flip off deathstar units, which are not fun to play against at all. I will take the dirty D over deathstars any day of the year.
I personally think that D weapons are over-nerfed under these rules. These are supposed to be the most devastating attacks in the game. If anything, they should have kept the “counts as str 10 for purposes of instant death” part…
