Miyazaki is a goddamned genius. Though, I must admit Nausicaa isn’t my favorite. Totoro and El Porko Rosso fill me with joy. Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle fill me with wonder. And Grave of the Fireflies makes me want to take up self-mutilation. Genius.
Yeah, I agree, he is a masterful story teller. Princess Monoke is one of the greats, IMO. I loved Nausicaa, but the movie was an all too typical “try to squish thousands of pages of manga into a 90 minute move” that can really ruin a great story. Cowboy Bee Bop did it right, just have a long episode for the movie.
It was my first, so it holds a special place. Actually, I think I saw this before I saw Akira. My Japanese professor had us watch Totoro–I was the only one in the class excited to see it. Both of my sons were raised on it.
Princess Mononoke is my favorite; it’s as close to perfect as anime can get.
Agree, Princess Monoke is just magic, so good. Akira is another all time great. I have all the Manga, and have seen both translations of the movie. The earlier translation has a lot of character, but didn’t get the story right. The second translation is better. Such a great story. That is an instance where they didn’t try and tell the entire story in the movie, just part of it, and it was great. The manga is better (as it almost always is) and I loved coming back to it later, and getting so much more story about the awesome characters.
This is a pic of one of Dave Drinans Phantoms as painted by some guy named Steve here in the states and has a twin with an even more impressive pose and diorama. It is shooting it’s cannon into a Helldrake’s mouth and has missiles flying everywhere. Really awesome guy with a passion for Eldar. You can check out his blog, When Craftworld’s Drop By.
Just watched Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind last week; face reminds me a bit of the warrior.

Did you like the movie? I didn’t care for it, I have the Manga though: so good!

I loved the movie… but I loved the manga even more. re-reading it right now… what an epic! Pretty gritty and gruesome too
Yeah, I couldn’t put the Manga down, read it all in just a few nights. Probably should go back and read it again to really get more of the depth.

Awesome!
Love the Evil-ness of this – really fresh compared to the usual Eldar look.
Oh how I wish I didn’t loathe the Eldar so much…they paint up so darn pretty! Very sinister indeed on this one.
I can’t even….
the action pose of it is amazing
