Today Games Workshop unveiled the newest codex in the Warhammer 40k family, the Daemonkin!
Those who thought this would be a supplemental codex a la Harlequins and Tempestus Scions are in for a rude surprise; the Codex Daemonkin clocks in at a beefy 120 pages. The followers of the Blood God have certainly been rewarded for their patience (must be all the skulls they’ve collected over the years). While the followers of the other 3 Chaos gods might feel a bit miffed at all the attention the Khorneholes (that’s what I call Khorne fans) are receiving this fully fleshed out codex should certainly give them hope that they will be soon be seeing full codex releases including new greater daemons. Though the codex is still in the pre-order phase there are tons of rumors floating around the net regarding what the codex contains. Here are some of the more accurate ones from Faeit212 and the Blog for the Blood God Facebook page.
– Kharn is not included in the codex. This doesn’t surprise me all that much but does make me wonder why they would not include him in the new Daemonkin codex. The cynical side of me says that GW did this so that players would be forced to purchase models from Chaos Space Marines in order to take Kharn as an ally or that they did it to encourage unbound play. The hopeful side of me thinks they would not have put that much thought into something so devious….
– ‘Blood for the Blood God’ Army Rule. Similar to the Power From Pain rules mechanic, the Daemonkin player generates tokens from all units (friendly or foe) that are destroyed which can be used to purchase upgrades for units for a single turn. There also appears to be Daemon summoning options when you get enough of the tokens stored. A cool spin on this new mechanic is that any time the tokens are used to purchase the upgrades any tokens not used are lost. This will make the player debate on how long they want to wait before using their tokens. Pretty cool!
– A Whole New Decurian Detachment (with BLOOD). Rumors say that the detachments in the book follow the Necron Decurion detachment model in that groups of models must be taken in order to unlock powerful special rules. The Decurion detachment was rumored to be the future of how army lists would be constructed in 40k and this certainly points towards the those rumors being correct. I think GW found a really good way to sell models as is evident from the Tomb Blades and Lychguard models being mostly unavailable from the US GW webcart since the release of Codex Necrons. How the hell else are they supposed to sell Possessed models, huh? HUH?
Thoughts – While this will be a fun release for the followers of Khorne (the Khorneholes) it will definitely be a beer and pretzels army choice. Assault in 7th edition is just so difficult I can’t see an army consisting of mostly assault units stand up to the onslaught of firepower they will face on the battlefield. It would be pretty cool if there is a special rule where Chaos Space Marine characters can join Daemon units and vice versa. This will be a fun new way to play those Khorne units that have been collecting dust in your closet for the past couple years. I really like the direction GW is going with these new codices. Now that they’ve updated all of the traditional codices to hard bound they’ve begun to bring us new content and more ways to play with our army men.
