Kublacon was a good time! (Updated with Bat Reps)

Just got back from the latest ITC event, Kublacon, which was held today in the bay area. The event was fun, over 40 players for 40k in a much larger general gaming con. BAO format, 3 rounds, 1750pts, 6th Ed rules. The event was fun, in a nice location and ran smooth for only a single staff member. The rounds were a bit short and the terrain a bit light, but it was a fun event with a lot of friends to hang out with. I brought my Orks out, Da Sons of Anorky, for one last hurrah in 6th and managed to win the event which was cool. Z3n1st got second and GTA got third, both with Seer Council Eldar. In 4th was Paul M. with Tau.

I had a pretty basic list: 2 warbosses, 2 units of shoota Boyz in Battlewagons, 2 units of slugga Boyz in Trukks, grots, 2 dakkajets, 2 units of lootas and an aegis with a quad gun. I played a balanced Ultramarine army for 8/10 points, a Khorne Dog/Fate Weaver list for 10/10 points and a Marine Biker army for 10/10 points, earning me the top spot. The Orks still have some life in them! I thought it would be fun to bust them out one last time in 6th before their new book drops and we roll into 7th.

I’ll post in more depth about the tournament tomorrow, but it was good fun. We had a young gun there, too, which was awesome as they are the future of the hobby. He was only 11, but he had a ton of fun, everyone was really nice to him and he even won his last game!

Thunderfire Cannon

This was a fun game. I got first turn, deployed aggressively in the middle and Jeremy counter-deployed me very well in a corner of the board. This took my Lootas out of position to contribute much to the game without repositioning and left a Trukk on a far flank unable to support the rest of the boyz. Well played, sir!

He didn’t seize and I went full Ork, straight at him. He easily picked up First Blood blowing up a Trukk, but it took quite a bit of doing. He also Immobilized a Battlewagon with his Melta squad in the Drop Pod. This left me within long range striking distance of him with some good charges, which combined with my WAAGH! should be doable. I decided to go for it but, my Shoota Boys with the Megaboss failed their charge, even with a reoll. Doh! That was bad as it left them sitting their with their Orky mushroom hanging in the breeze. I was able to tie up a Tac squad though, with my Trukk Boyz, and my second unit of Shoota Boyz assisted by the Bikerboss easily destroyed the Drop Pod Squad.

I was pretty worried at this point as I was exposed and hadn’t tied up enough of his army. However, I got lucky when Jeremy failed to destroy my exposed Shoota Boys with Megaboss in the shooting phase and I ran away far enough to deny him a charge with his Hammernators, leaving him in turn exposed. By now, the rest of my army had repositioned into firing range with e Lootas and Dakkajet Support and I was able to hit him with everything I had left, rolling through his castle and killing all his troops by turn 4 with my remainning Shhota and Trukk Boyz, leaving him unable to win the game so we called it. My Grots, once again, sealed it by sitting on my back objective playing patty cake and occasionally firing the Quad Gun. Go little guys!

Very fun game, damn near lost it turn 2 when my big gamble fell short, but was able to recover. Jeremy was an excellent opponent.

8-1 Victory for Orks.

Soul Grinder

Daemon Prince of Tzeentch: Gifts, Wings, Armor

This could have been a tough game, Khorne Dog rush can really eat Orks up when they get juiced up with the Grim and psychic buffs. A Soul Grinder and FMCs can give Orks trouble if they are lucky with grounding checks. Luckily though, I got first turn and my opponent made a critical error when he Scout moved his Dogs and Herald too close to me. I then hit him with the house, charging in both Warbosses, 18 Shoota Boyz and a unit of Trukk Boyz into the dogs after softening them up with shooting and was able to kill them down to three dogs (invlucing the Herald with the Grim who got Klawed), keeping me safe from his next round of (brutal) shooting, and then killing them in his turn, allowing me to charge into his backfield in my turn 2. This honestly decided the game and was compounded when he tried to recover from that by aggressively flying Fatey and the DP into my backfield (which was the right move) but both of my Dakkajets came on turn 2 (thanks to my Warlord trait) and I called my WAAGH! giving me 36 twin linked strength 6 shots, which dropped Fatey like a hot rock. From there, he just didn’t have the tools to fight his way back into the game. By the bottom of turn 2, I had killed all of his troops and that was a wrap.

Andy wasn’t used to playing Orks and didn’t realize how hard they can hit in assault. He realized his mistake and I am sure he won’t make it again. He was a great opponent, though, and we had a fun game.

10-1 Victory to the Orks.

Game 3: Steve S.

vs. White Scars

Chapter Master: Bike, Hammer, Shield Eternal, Artificer

Librarian: Shield, Level 2

Command Squad: Apothecary, Champion, S.Shield x 3, P.Axe x 3

Bikers x 5: M.Melta, Plas x 2, P.Pistol

Bikers x 5: M.Melta, Grav x 2, C.Grav

Bikers x 5: M.Melta, Grav x 2, C.Grav

Tacticals x 5: Flamer, C.Flamer

Storm Raven: Hurricane Bolters

Storm Talon

Ven Dread: Twin Las, H.Flamer

Under normal circumstances I would look at this match-up and feel very certain of victory due to the simple fact that I outnumbered my opponent 4-1. But, Steve is an excellent player (and his army was gorgeous) that has won many events. I knew this would be a tough game.

Steve gave me first turn and I knew he would hide behind the huge piece of LoS blocking terrain in the middle of the table. I set up my army to be able to sweep around either side of the terrain to react to where Steve went as he would dictate where the fight happened with his bikes. I through a bait unit up within charge range but out of LoS for any of his heavy hitting guns hoping he would come up and assault it, leaving him in front of my Lootas and support units. He started to take the bait but at the last minute realized what I was doing and didn’t commit to the assault. So close!

However, I was in a position to strike at him as I had a Trukk on either flank and both Battlewagons central with my Bikerboss as free safety. I went for an all out turn 2 charge again, and all but one unit made combat. That plus my Dakkajet support meant I was able to hit Steve hard. I knew I would win the fights that kicked off in assault, but I thought they’d cost me a lot more in Orks than it did. Steve’s dice went ice cold for a turn and he just couldn’t make a save and his Command Squad with Libby and Chapter Master melted. After my turn 2, all he had left was his Chapter Master with a single wound left…ouch. To add insult to injury, the Chapter Master Hit and Run away to charge a unit of Lootas (only really viable target left) and promptly died to the single wound I did to him with over-watch. Ouch. With his Storm Raven carrying the Tacticals and Dread escorted by the Storm Talon failed to come on the table, the game was over. My Orks were on his side of the table to kill the Bikes that did come on the board and by turn 5, his army was wiped. A bad match-up combined with bad dice on a critical turn sealed this game.

10-0 victory to the Orks. Steve was a skilled opponent and took the bad luck with class.

So when the dust settled, the Orks were the winners! 28/30 battle points, and I squeaked past z3e1nst and GTA who got second and third with Seer Council Eldar and Paul who got 3rd with Tau. Go Orks!
