No movie up yet.
Excellent game! It definitely looks like skyblight is going to be tough to contend with, even factoring in the bad turns of rolling on the necron side. Looking forward to seeing more battle reports with this formation.
nice report Jeff. what’s frankie’s number?
Jy2 was saying he had only lost 2-3 times with this army in 2 editions 🙂 NIDS ON THE BOARDS FOLKS
awesome game, very nice to see the nids putting in work!
Thanks!
BTW, these were our lists:
Dakka flyrant
Dakka flyrant
Dakka flyrant
Tervigon
30 Termagants – 8 Devourers
10 Gargoyles
10 Gargoyles
10 Gargoyles
Hive Crone
Hive Crone
Harpy (HVC)
Harpy (Stranglethorn)
Geoff went more with the units that he (and the store….and I) had and also units that he was more familiar with. His psychic powers included 1 Catalyst, 2 Onslaughts, 2 Psychic Screams and Dominion on the tervie.
This was my list:
D-lord – 2+, MSS, ResOrb
D-lord – 2+, MSS
2×5 Gauss Immortals in Night Scythes
2×5 Warriors in Night Scythes
3×5 Wraiths
3 Annihilation Barges
For the record, I’ve only lost twice with my Necrons ever since 6th Ed. came out (before this game). Back in 5th, I believe I only lost once with my wraithwing or MTO necrons (ironically, that was against Reece’s Tyranids back in 5th). However, I do have some losses with my more casual, non-Wraithwing/MTO necrons.
I still had a chance to win it at the end. I only needed to kill 1 more gargoyle. However, my warriors hit 6 times and I only manage to wound twice (needed to wound at least thrice). Oh well, not one of my greatest games dice-wise, though in all fairness, Geoff played great and my D-lords did get back up I believe 4 times.
In any case, Skyblight Nids are going to dominate the Tournament scene, especially if people play it the way we did in this game (where you CANNOT contest the gargoyles at all). You will see them up there on the top tables. You will even see them win tournies. They are like last years screamer/flamer-spam Tzeentch Daemons before they got updated by the new Daemon codex. Yes, they are THAT good.
Thanks, Jim.
Man, I don’t want to go and buy two more of the new flier kits, but everything I hear about the Skyblight Swarm makes it sound so good…
It is. Skyblight will change the meta once again. Now, armies will have to take into account not only massed FMC’s, but regenerating scoring units that will be hard to contest in competitive play. It’s going to be doubly challenging for most armies to do so.
This Formation may be a bit much, honestly. We need to playtest it more.
Its ok if Missions hold by Gargoyles can be contested, but the otherway its also working. 1 fu**ing Gargoyle can just steal an Objektive from u.
“Commander Commander. We couldnt hold the objective”
“Why?”
“There was a single gargoyle, it looked at us menacingly”
“gargoyle? The thing that will get shredded by your bolter?”
“Yes”
*Blam*
“Get me a more competant squad”
It’s insanely good.
I really hope my Meta starts allowing data slates and formations. These would be a great asset to any tyranid army. i really love the living Artillery one, i just doubt i’ll get to play it in Houston, lol
We’re going to open the doors to some of this stuff, for sure. I think some of them are really fun and hep a ton.
Yo! I’m playing a 1500 tournament next weekend and I’m gonna try out sky blight myself. We mostly play 1850, but the up coming tournament is 1500.
I just can’t decide if I’m gonna bring the 3rd dakkarant or 2nd hive crone.
My 2 lists would be:
3x dakkarants
Zoanthrope
2×10 term
3×10 gargs
2x harpy
1x hive crone
Bastion
Or
2x dakkarants 1 with regen
Zoanthrope
Venomthrope
2×10 terms
3×10 gargs
2x harpy
2x hive crone
Bastion
The zoan goes in bastion for backfield synapse.
Definitely looks like this type of list is a winner.
That’s my only complaint with the skyblight dataslate… the list seems to write itself and is then better than most other things you can come up with using the codex. It’s like GW wrote their own netlist.
Doing anything other than adding flyrants (duh), more crones (double duh) or the mandatory two troops doesn’t really make for an optimal list. You can leave the tervigon at home and take a third crone… but that doesn’t really make you feel like you’ve made the army your own…
Yeah, that’s why I keep comparing it to the old Tzeentch Flamer/Screamer-spam Daemons. It’s an anomaly of a list and got better as you add more flamers/screamers to the list. Same with the Skyblight. It gets better the more FMC’s and gargoyles you add to the list.
Personally, I prefer the 3rd flyrant because flyrants are a much more flexible unit and with better offense.
I was thinking the same. More rolls for catalyst is nice
My guess is the best way to do this IS too not completely kill the gargoyles. Or too contest with non-troops(Someone told me they cant be conteste by troops, although Im not sure if they are right)
The rule says enemy scoring unit
I honestly hope TOs will allow dataslates from now on… Skyblight swarm is a bit over the top? Who cares!!! When is the last time you saw nids winning a tourney? It’s not like we have all other armies on par and nids suddendly screw up a balanced game right?
It’s nice to see a different army challenge the top ones, especially if it’s one that was lacking in the competitive scene from 2 editions.
Oh btw I’m a chaos player and I play nids quite often
Ps: Thanks Reecius and everyone else for the lovely blog!
Thanks for the feedback and glad you like the blog!
We will for 100% certain be allowing at least most of the formations.
Well holy shit. That cron list is one of the most cheese-tastic things i’ve ever seen and NIDS beat it!? Hats off to Geoff though man, that was well played.

9 FMC’s. Over-scoring Gargoyles that won’t stay dead. So. Much. Pressure.
Personally, I’d drop 1 crone to add some more support units, including backfield Synapse and other stuff.
no backfield synapse unless you leave behind a dakka flyrant which would be a waste.. jy2 is correct.. drop a crone and add 2 zoeys or better yet find the points for a tervigon. Synapse brother! We cannot forget this or we die! Especially the lil guys!
How would you deal with riptides with skyblight? Im gong to a 1500 points tourney this weekend, and I know there will be alot of Tau with Riptides.
Just overload them with your threats. They won’t be able to shoot down enough in time. You will lose some FMC’s, but when your gargoyles hit their lines, they will be in trouble.
Hey, i’ve noticed you guys have been playing 1850 a bunch lately, is that the size that your future events are going to be, or are you going to stick to 1750?
That is a good questions. I would be more inclined to travel to their events if they went up in points.
Actually, Geoff and I were practicing for Adepticon, which is at 1850. However, since the Adepticon missions aren’t published yet, we decided to use LVO missions instead.
I think it’s more that there are a lot of other events that are 1850pts. Though, I like my own lists at 1850 better than what I can fit into 1750, so I wouldn’t mind.
I wonder with this formation if it would be a good time to try the single brainleech/ LW/BS flyrant with toxin. If you used Geoff’s list it would be the same except 4 devilgaunts would be normal gaunts.
I know the tyrant would most likely die as soon as he got out of combat unless it was on your opponent’s turn but with 3 i feel i could brute force them around.
thoughts?
Frankly, IMO you need the shooting of the dakkarants. Any CC-tyrant is just less optimized. Then again, many people play for more for flavor rather than for efficiency. If you like it, then go ahead and do it.
I gotta say that was a great batrep and glad to see such power from the Skyblight formation. Curious to see InControl run this again soon after some more games to get fully familiar with it. And finally the commentary from InControl batreps is highly entertaining haha, keep it up bro
shaaaaky caaaaaam, slowly getting better though. do not need close up views of anything, ever lol
I have run the Skyblight formation twice now, and it seems really hard to beat. I have been running 7 FMC’s total and I completely destroyed an eldar list tonight. It’s not even the gargoyles, its just the sheer amount of flyers in a single FOC.
The living artillery seemed a lot more balanced.
I won’t be running skyblight again, as neither I, nor my opponent enjoyed it. However I did enjoy using harpies for the first time.
I played a 1500 points tournament this weekend with skyblight. I ended up winning 2 out of 5 games :(. .
First loss was aggainst venom spam / beast star. Purge the alien and off course he got first turn. I reserved all my FMCs and they came in on 4th turn 🙁
The 2nd loss was aggainst taudar in the scouring.
3rd aggainst o’vesa / farsight.
This was my first games with skyblight and with more practice I think I will do better aggainst Tau. I’m really considering sky shield landing pad for protection aggainst Tau with first turn. In both matches vs Tau I lost first blood and warlord 1st turn. No cover save, no swooping and they don’t need los :(.
Yeah, going second against a safh is the weakness of skyblight.
