Blackmoor calls Reecius out and wants to get that $100! Can he do what all others have failed to do and beat Taudar with Tyranids? As always, check out the Tactics Corner for more videos and articles!

No forgeworld in your army Reece? You didnt o the bestest Troll?
I would have used them if we had any painted!
was looking forward to this bat rep but saw the 14 minute time and was like ‘oops’
Pretty much.
what is ripple fire?
Nova charging the SMS to fire twice.
If your going to rely so heavily on all of your reserve rolls coming on together you really should be taking a comms relay.
^ This. I expect that a bastion+comms relay will become as standard in a ‘nid list as a hell turkey is to CSM. You can hardly expect to win without one.
Yeah, it’s a pretty good option. It also extends a synapse & venomthrope bubble pretty well and stops ignore cover weapons simply alpha striking a venomthrope.
Ok so Taudar is obscene. However, I don’t think people have figured out how to optimize Tyranid’s yet. Or perhaps paid to optimize. This player was a solid general with a suboptimal list. So far I’ve been 0/2 vs Tyranid’s with Deathwing. Admittedly a humble force, but the point is Tyranid’s are not unplayeable day to day. I won my summer league with the DA codex (Ravenwing) over Tau and Eldar players, so I don’t think I’m a complete pushover.
That said yeah, I don’t expect them to wade through a sea of Taudar and win major tourney’s.
A question: should we be hoping that IG, BA, SW, NC, and GK codex’s match Eldar/Tau codex’s in power? Or should we hope they match CSM and DA? (With CSM in between)
Deathwing absolutely struggles against horde armies. My Nids and Footdar smash them every single time. That is like, Nids vs. Taudar in reverse.
Deathwing is fine on it’s own, but math says they fail against Horde armies badly, so I think that explains the results you’ve experienced a bit.
And yeah, Taudar are mega powerful, no doubt.
I hope all the dexes are with Tau and Eldar and that everything else gets boosted, but we seem to be going the other direction so let’s see Tau and Eldar nerfed and hopefully we’re all on the same level.
Ugh – Nice idea with the Nids here, but I could never play my Nids that way (Just get shot at for 4 turns and try and take it in the end? really?)
The biggest problem I’ve seen with Nid lists and games so far is the Synapse issue. Maybe we need to rethink taking a troop tervy for reliable synapse, and 1 brood of warriors with a strangler in the back field…
Trygon primes could also be useful for more stable synapse.
I think a big problem with all the games I’m seeing at frontline is sinking points into two flyrants. That’s 500 points of synapse creature that has to fly forwards aggressively to be worthwhile and rarely gets its points back or survives to give you synapse in the endgame.
Nids are at least partially a board control army, so you need to think about what gives you reliable synapse in your back-field, mid-field and then have a good way to challenge the opponents objectives. Synapse units need to be designed to do all of these things.
What do you think? A Prime? But what an abject waste of points! Ach, it grates me, all he does is stop your guys from killing themselves. So lame. I wish he at least was a psyker.
I’m trying the Sea of Blades concept out using a Prime and Footrant. Check my post in army lists and give your thoughts. Its been interesting so far.
Seems like there isn’t a lot of kill power in that list? Am I missing it?
Agreed. The sheer brainless approach GW took to writing the Nid codex is best demonstrated by the Prime. It was created to fill the role of a cheap HQ, so what does GW do? Massive points increase lol. Cant make it up.
They should have given it a new role in the codex or left it alone. As it stands it does nothing badly.
If you take a prime, you either run it in a unit of 30 gants up the field (so he can’t be targeted) and then split him off for a turn three charge, or run him with a brood of dakka fexes… If you take two groups of 3 dakka fexes, you can run the Prime in one unit, then swap him over to the other one as it gets depleted…
I think you’re better off getting your synapse up in other areas though – 1 – 2 broods of 2x Zoeys, A troop Tervy, a min brood of warriors (yes they ID to str 8, but who’s going to be shooting at them before your 2 Flyrants?)
First off I think Reecius should have given him the Catalyst on his flyrant; after 3 muligans you can throw one the other guys way. I dont think that would have changed the game at all, just sitting back and taking it in the butt and hoping for a 1/3 chance at victory isnt going to win.
I would like to see someone try a list with both the Death leaper Assassin Squad, and Manufactorium Genestealers.
Another thing I think that wasn’t capitalized on that would allow you a turn or two to march up and push tau off the the table are Spores. Drop two of these guys for 30 points a pop (pun not intended). Will they make it to the next turn assault…HELL NO, but it is going to take two units of shooting to dispose of them or get a S10 pie plate.
I think that there are answers out there but I haven’t seen anyone other than Bigpig really trying. I am hopping bigpig tweaks his list and comes in smashing; Sea of Blades style.
I left it up to him and he chose not to take it. Also, my mulligans were minor, like casting a power out of order.
And Tau will just kill spores with overwatch =( no need to waste shots on them.
I hope we see Nids come alive too, but so far, they are really awful.
it appeared Reecius did offer the muligan, some players don’t take them.
My bad, and ya nids def are on the back foot this go round. But you could eat some over watch with the spores so your haunts don’t have too. The issue there is timing and distance. Studies say that it works 60% of the time all re time.
Thanks for the report, you guys help the work day go by faster. I understand the challenges associated with the new Tyranids, however I think this is more of statement about TauDar being absolutely ridiculous than Tyranids being horrible. There aren’t many army builds out there that can reliably beat that list.
That’s a fair assessment. Taudar are brutal.
That’s the thing though, this isn’t even close to the best available Eldau/Taudar list. I honestly don’t think the studio Taudar list is top tier. It has too many squishy bits in it. Namely Pathfinders and small Fire Warrior squads.
This list would be stronger if it emulated Kurt Clauss and flipped the roles, with some Wave Serpents to add durable scoring, and traded in the Fire Warriors for Kroot. Or if it built around a Reaperstar, trading the Tau Commander back and forth with the Riptide based on what needed killing.
To say nothing of the real tier 1 Eldar and Tau builds, Seer Council and Ovesa Star.
We are insulted, sir! Pistols at 10 paces!
hahaha. If anything I’m just helping your argument. A variety of Nid builds played by a variety of skilled generals cannot beat a Taudar build that could be optimized even more.
But if we must, I do have a few pistols floating around here somewhere……
No I understood, haha, I was just joking around. We built this list to be good and not break the bank, too!
I love Blackmoor, but that ‘nid list is awful. Basically the game plan was use 2 mawlocs and 2 flying hive tyrants to try and contest objectives? I have only been playing nids for 18 months, but I’ve been playing 40k for 22 years, I don’t feel like a complete slouch. I don’t understand why he took 3 undersized termagant units and 3 very squishy zoanthropes as individuals. The army felt really lite on synapse. Synapse was a problem last codex, and is a HUGE problem this codex, I would have expected to see more.
I can’t play the ‘my list is better’ game b/c I don’t live in SF, and I don’t have anywhere near the tourney experience Blackmoore does, but the list just seems really weak to me.
I played Mawlocs heavily last codex and ended up taking them out, I found they weren’t worth the paper value they had. They’re too easy to kill, and sucked in close combat, with no shooting attack. That hasn’t really gotten better this edition. They’re just cheaper, and slightly better at blowing stuff up when they come on the board–but worse at coming on the board (no first turn dive, and auto-mishap).
They might be the biggest threat to a taudar gun line, though, so I can understand taking them for that purpose. Didn’t seem like Blackmoor used them for that purpose, though–seemed like he used them just to contest objectives.
Anyway, hopefully someone wins the ‘competition’?
I may come off somewhat cocky, but I feel confident my bugs can beat any of Reece’s other armies. It’s Taudar and Frankie’s venom-spam that would give my bugs the most problems.
Perhaps I will re-visit the challenge after the LVO, that is, if no one else does it before I do. 😉
Bring it on!
Mawlocs are overrated by net experts who don’t actually play nids but see a Str 6 pieplate and only see how great it would be when it works. They were worth trying with the points decrease and props to Blackmoor for trying them as a means to disrupt the Taudar gunline, but I just don’t see them being reliable and consistent enough.
I agree, Mawlocs have been awful in our experience.
His mawlocs actually did alright against my paladins….sorta, kinda. 😀
Haha, you’re just being nice!
So far in practice, we have seen them do nothing at all cool. Not once. They typically scatter, kill maybe a guy or two and then die.
From Dakka Dakka:
The game was lost with the dice roll to pick sides. This allowed 2 things to happen:
#1. He go to pick the deployment zone with a 2 story ruin. This meant that he could place his Broadsides up there and my Mawlocs could not touch them. My deployment zone only had a couple of cans that 2 broadsides can stand on and the rest of them would have been lunch..
#2. Reese got to place the odd objective. That means that he has 2 objectives right in front of his castle and that I have to cross the table under all of that firepower to get to them. If I could castle up with the objectives in front of me and he has to come to my side of the table it would have been a different game.
Because of where the objectives were placed I had no choice but to try to overwhelm him on turn #2. If I can fly my 2 Hive Tyrants there and they could shoot 2 units, my Mawlocs could hit 2 units, and I would have my 2 genestealers squads outflank there (I had acute senses as a warlord trait). He can’t kill everything and I then try to take out his troops. My plan fell apart when I forgot catalyst on my Hive Tyrant (who would have still been alive) and my bad reserve rolls. If I could have got all of my reserve units in on turn #2 the game would have been different one way or another. The fact that they didn’t meant that I had to go to plan B and try for the turn 5 win.
So you’re saying it was ONLY dice, huh? Just want to be sure =P
Mawlocs are more of a disruption unit than a killy unit. If you think about it they only hit 1/3 of the time and if they miss then they just sit there.
A few other notes:
#1. The first game I have played with Nids in about 8 years was the day before this game.
#2. I did not take a mulligan on the catalyst because that was on me because I forgot it. Also I would not want to win a $100 by going back. I gave every break, and took none myself.
#3. I only had about 3 hours of sleep the night before.
#4. This game was right after a 6 hour drive from LA to the Bay Area.
#5. This list was what I threw together. Sometimes you have to play with that army you have, not the army you want.
How has play-testing with the Exocrine gone?
I played a team game against Space Wolves and Eldar. The Exocrine’s stats and gun freaked them out, so they targeted the heck out of him immediately. He survived until turn 3, despite 2 squads of Long Fangs (with the Runepriest ability that ignores cover), 2 Wave Serpents, and a squad of Wraithguard shooting at him.
Unfortunately, both of his firing modes missed with every shot. I tried both modes literally just to try them. The plate scattered off, and the 6 shots all missed. Not kidding.
The good news is, he drew so much fire that the rest of my ‘nids, as well as my teammates army, were able to get in good position.
The Elites slot is otherwise open for Tyranids, so 1 or 2 Exocrines seems viable. Tyranids just don’t have shooting options that good otherwise. 24″ also isn’t as short-ranged as some people seem to think. Most deployment zones start 24″ from each other…just saying.
