News
- LAV VEGAS OPEN!!!! Ticket will be up for sale on Wednesday, 7-24-13!!!
LET’S GET READY TO RUUUUMBLE!!
- Feast of Blades tournament at Equilibrium Games in Concord, CA on the 27th of July. This one isn’t a qualifier though, but it does sound fun with good prize support and 1 day RTTs are always such a fun way to spend the day.
- Raging Heroes “Toughest Girls of the Galaxy” Kickstarter funded with $700,000! Good for them, can’t wait to see some of these very cool minis.
- Soda Pop Miniatures Kickstarter went hot! Funded at $909,000 and they are posting updates on their site of the minis.
- Drop Zone Commander releases some new models that are sweet! The Post Human Republic, Hades, the United Colonies of Mankind, Long Bow artillery and the Shaltari, Warspire.
- Scibor releases a new Dwarf Green.
- HiTech releases something that doesn’t look like a Terminator for a change, yay!
- Dust Tactics comes out with some super cool new walker suits, the Heavy Red Command NCO squad.
- A game new to us, Journey, Wrath of Demons, put up a pic of a new Monk mini that is just bad ass.
- Listener Marcell L. sent in some pictures for the rules of the old Rogue Trader era Death Mission, and you can see where the power has its roots! DEATH MISSION!!! *que Guitar solo!
- Fantasy escalation league! We are going to be kicking this off in the near future, probably early August, starting out at 500pts per player, anyone who wants to join in with us is welcome. Thanks to everyone for their feedback and suggestions. If anyone wants to join in and learn Fantasy with us, if they order $100 worth of stuff, we’ll ship their goodies for free!
Rumors: The Rumor Section is gathered from the web and is not in any way information we receive from any manufacturer. We discuss them only because we are nerds that get super pumped about what may be coming like you guys do! The only real reliable source of information is each manufacturer’s official website. Take anything said her as rumors only and not fact.
- 40K Supplements are being released in order of least changes to the rules to most. Apparently people are complaining that the supplements are just a money grab. Weak! The supplements are awesome, fun to read and give us more diversity. If you don’t like them, don’t buy them. We say bring them on! I can’t wait for more!
- Supplements are being released digitally first not because it’s a money grab, but because the printers GW uses can’t actually keep up. As we go forward, they will supposedly be coming out within a week of release in hard copy.
Rant Session
Rules Lawyer
- Ignores Cover and vehicles. Can you take away a cover save from a vehicle?
- Rending and Vehicles.
- I don’t know what the correct answer is on order of operations for stat modifiers, but I can articulate the opposing argument.
- The rulebook never mentions anything about timing when telling you how to do order of operations. It doesn’t say “if it’s in a previous phase, it now counts as part of the base stat”… the only reference to this that that I’m aware of is with hammerhand in the grey knights codex, where it specifically states that the stat increase comes before the doubling from a power fist… and the fact that it needs to specifically outline this implies that it is an exception to the normal rule.
The only thing the BRB says right now is this (page 2):
- Cameron’s response to the last Rules Lawyer session regarding order of operations and stat modifiers:
“If a model has a combination of rules or wargear that modify a characteristic, first apply any multipliers, then apply any additions or subtractions, and finally apply set values.”
So in the specific case on the podcast, ask yourself, “is Gift of Contagion a rule that modifies a characteristic?”
“Yes”
Then it goes in the order of operations with everything else. Multiplication first, then the +1 and -1 from furious charge and Gift of Contagion. S10.
If you say that timing, or how “permanent” a modifier is, or what phase the modifier occurred in changes this rule… there’s nothing in the rulebook to base that on! Where does that come from?
“Is Champion of Chaos a ‘rule that modifies a characteristic’?”
“Yes”
Then the order of operations apply. Multiplication first, then the Chaos Boon.
Again, I don’t know what the real answer is, but that’s the opposing argument.
List Review
- That being said I know that the DA book is not super competitive either but what do you think about the following list for review? Trying to stick to some fluff but also TAC.DA – 1750 (Ravenwing)HQ – Sammael – 200 – warlord
Basically here because his model kicks ass and he gets me ravenwing as troops. I was wondering in terms of tournaments do they allow you to switch between bike/landspeeder in between rounds? Since demons can change their loadout and he’s the same cost either way….
HQ – Ezekiel – 145
Gotta love mind worm and getting divination powers… also with the list I was thinking about either telepathy or telekinesis can be helpful. Will be placed with the Deathwing Knights squad to give them more utility and to give Ezekiel T5, plus he boosts their WS +1 to make sure you he more and with mindworm you may help their survivability that much more!
HQ – Techmarine – 140
Servitor x2 (H.bolter), infravision, powerfield
Basically here to improve the scouts so they can get 2+ coversaves and he can bounce around to provide nightfight as needed. Also cheap way to bring some more Dakka.
HQ – Ravenwing command (4) – 195
Apothecary, rad grenades, champion
I was debating between another troop ravenwing or this and I settled on this mainly for the plasma Dakka and a vehicle to give Sammael FNP. Plus the occasional -1 T shenanigans can be useful for denying other people’s FNP.
Troops – Scouts (5) – 95
Camo, sniper x 4, missile (flakk)
Troops – Scouts (5) – 95
Camo, sniper x 4, missile (flakk)
These guys are my objective holders with sniper shenanigans and a flakk missile to threaten flyers these guys sit in cover with one squad getting the Techmarine bonus for a 2+ cover potentially in the opponents backfield.
Troops – Ravenwing squad (3) – 160
Attack bike (melta), flamer x2, sarge (m. Bombs)
My objective grabber and jack of trades has, anti horde and vehicle and with Darkshroud support some added survivability
Elite – Deathwing Knights (5) – 525
L. Raider Redeemer, relic
Basically my mini Death Star / counter force. Add Ezekiel and there isn’t much you cannot take on. Debating between crusader vs. redeemer but I like fire 😉
FA – Darkshroud – 80
This will help bring some extra cover to those that need it. Dies easy but will take fire away from others and potentially negate some lucky shooting against me.
Heavy – Whirlwind – 65
Heavy – Whirlwind – 65
These are to help combat hordes since I did not take the banner of devastation. Plus barrage goodness. Enough said.
Would love to hear what you think!
Mike
Our club plays order of stat operations by the book. All effects apply multiples first, then additions, then set modifiers, etc. So an Ork Nob on the charge with a power fist has Str 9, and an Enfeebled Ork Nob on the charge with power fist has Str 8. A tervigon with crushing claws first halves their base attacks, then adds d3 attacks or bonus attacks from the charge. It seems pretty clear in the rules that this is the way it works. Even with things like chaos boons. You guys may not like it, but the rules are against you. Some cases can seem ambiguous though, but the examples you raised have a clear solution in my mind.
Yeah, I think you are right. As we said, the rules are clear, it just doesn’t feel right, but that isn’t a sound justification to rule against it.
I like those floating brain dudes, would be awesome as the special/heavy weapons in a mars adeptus mechanicus themed guard army.
Ah yeah, that would be a good use for them!
Rules query. Nightspinners get Str 8 if their target is I3 or less. What if you target a Rhino, and clip a couple of Marines? Your ‘target’, the Rhino, is less than I3, so would the Marines take a Str8 hit?
I would rule it as each individual unit hit has the strength of the attack determined based upon their majority initiative.
That’s what we played it as, it came up in the Contest of Champions yesterday (which I won, and basically got a free Wraithknight, so that was pretty awesome), I just thought it was an interesting question.
Seems logical to me. And congratz, Gordy, well done! Would you be interested in writing up a battle report for Frontline?
I don’t have any pictures, but if you’re ok with all text I can see about it, they were 3 pretty solid games (Daemons/CSM, Eldar/DE, and Drop Pod Space Wolves), so it would definitely make a pretty good report. I might be able to recall the positioning well enough to do vassal 40k pictures.
Vassal pics and a written report would be awesome if you are up for it. After your trip is fine.
I am going out on a backpacking trip for five days, so I’ll have time to write out notes, but I couldn’t type it up until next week.
hey Reece this feast of blades event at concord IS a quaalifier, however it is not a prrimier qualifier and there will be no vouchers given for the first place winner. (i.e, how frankie got one night at the hotel paid and enrty fee paid) but the event is i repeat is a qualifier for the feast of blades event.
OK cool, thanks for the clarification, we will mention that in the next podcast.
The Farsight book allows you to take a riptide independent character (well, all of the eight are IC’s).
Ally with Eldar and you can join Eldar units. No scatter deep striking Warp Spiders?
Suits joining a seer council? Spirit Seer Council from Iyanden having a Riptide tank for them?
A warlock seer council being joined by suits seems interesting. I don’t know what it means yet and will study it over a few beers.
Check the FAQ. Invulnerable saves have been updated to include pens and glancing hits
Yes, I saw that, we mention it in the latest podcast. Thanks for pointing it out!
Where can I go for information on the WHFB escalation league?
Thanks for the show.
Nothing on the site yet, just shoot any questions to me at contact@frontlinegaming.org and I’d be happy to answer. We will start mid August at 500pts!
a good supplement dex could help lift dark eldar back up into competitive rather then being spoiler armies. hope they don’t get over looked for the more obvious craftworlds, marine chapters, and warbands. plus I’ve kinda always wanted to hear more on the big kabals/cults/covens so it’d be a good way to expand the fluff into a playable approach.
