Hey everyone, I have been having a blast writing up some cool themed lists lately, I was wondering what some of you have been writing up?
I love the fluff in this game, and I love creating cool, themed armies. However, I also hate to lose, haha. So, I need an army that will both play well and hopefully look and feel cool to me.
Some of the ideas I have been toying with are:
- Samurai Themed Grey Knights. I wrote an article on this a while back which you can read about here and here.
- Judge Dredd/Adeptus Arbites themed army using IG/Space marine allies.
- Dark Footdar (now that you can’t assault out of a WWP, it is more of a shooty list)
- My Trukk Orks, with a different themed unit for each Trukk. This army is a blast to play!
- Dirty Dozen IG, led by a Lord Commissar or Yarrick most likely, and then a dozen, different themed units, each with a lot of character to them!
I’ve got a zillion other ideas swimming around in my head, too! So much cool stuff to do, but so little time. The nice thing is that with allies, you can start these types of armies and build them out slowly, but still be able to use and play them as you build up the army.
What types of themed lists are you all toying with?
I’m going for a mk4 army BA, a complete change from the baroque armour of 40k. so mk4 assaults, devs and tacticals. sevrin loth converted, the sweet mk4 apothecary. then tartros terminators and contemptor dreads.
It’ll be a lovely change from Death company and sang guard models
+ bits 🙂
That sounds awesome! I love the old Mark armors, I have a bunch of them myself.
I had an idea for a plague army a while ago… Primary detachment would be a Nurgle army (Typhus, Plague marines & zombie cultists) along with a counts as Necron detachment using anything with a reanimation protocol, the RP rules fit in well with the whole plague zombie theme & I would imagine you could put together some pretty good lists with the two codex’s.
I was more so interested in the conversion possibilities though…
Necron warriors could be warrior acoyltes or scouts
Immortals could be marines
Ghost arks could be warshrines
And a lords with res orb would be your plague lord, all zombified appropriately of course.
Yeah, some people get upset about counts as armies, but I have always really liked them. I think it opens up so many modeling possibilities. As long as I can tell what’s what, I am all for it.
Nice, cant wait to see what you cook up there.
Thanks!
Check out http://thelazaruseffect.blogspot.com/ for a cool take on the Judge Dredd IG concept.
Damn, those look good! I like them. I have seen a few attempts at this type of army, but few see it through to the finish line. The only thing holding me back is that fact that I already have essentially the army, but just with models that don’t look the way I want them too. I would basically be making the same exact army just with different models.
Swamp-crons. Covered in vines and swamp sludge (as opposed to rust necrons)

Check that out for some inspiration! I have seen it done before, it comes out looking awesome.
A buddy of mine built an Ork trukk to look like a school bus. It was pretty awesome.

Puppetswar makes one of those, they’re awesome! I really like them, they have a lot of character.
I am finishing up my Space Wolves and the theme is the Emporers Executioners. They have 20 terminators and 40 grey hunters with t wo rune priests. To be more competitive I have added an Aegis defense line, quad, drop pods and if points allow 5 thunder wolf Calvary. I can get AT&T that in at 1750. I have no heavy support but terms and calvary have basic kit and Malta bombs.
Calvary tends to be very tough to bring down and Mark of Wulfen is scattered throughout.
Oh, and by competitive I mean, I won’t get tabled, but I also do not win too many tournament games… But it is fun.
I am building a Death Hunters Dark Angel army that is 25 Deathwing and 2 bike squads and some whirl wind support behind the aegis. At 1750 I just add another terminator squad. I also keep a very small and cheap squad with the librarian to man the aegis and the Hunter aspect. Is that all of the Deathwing deploys via deep strike.
My Orks are painted in tans, browns and drabs, and their theme is Afrika Korps. It is a horde army but has a couple of trucks and a battle wagon. I just started this one and have a long way to go. Need some flyers and such.
Also dabbling in some Chaos. Not sure of a theme, but I like the zombie theme, especially considered the strength the zombies showed in the 2nd Horus Heresy novel. Very tough.
That sounds like a really fun army to play. I think I would really enjoy that list. I always like SOME ranged firepower, though. Are you running Cylcones on the Terminators?
And yeah, the Zombie theme is awesome! Such fun, I really like that as well. I also like the idea of Fallen Dark Angels as well, that gives so many cool modeling opportunities.
My friend has built this fantastic Lovecraft inspired Tyranid army:

That is awesome! I love Lovecraft’s universe and those are really, really cool.
This makes me so incredibly happy.
I find space wolves pretty easy to do themes for while still being fairly competitive.
I totally agree. It’s hard to go wrong with them!
I love themed armies…looking good is far more important than winning!
My classic themed-army is my Ordo Xenos Militant, the Deathwatch, using the Codex: Space Wolves as the basis. No Blood-Claws, cuz they all need to be veteran troops. The key points were True-Grit and all the possible variation in weapon and gear loadouts. Seemed perfect to represent the many varying styles and tactics of the Deathwatch. The all have the appropriate shoulder pads (both for the Deathwatch, as well as thier individual chapters), and Bolters.
That sounds awesome! I love the Deathwatch fluff, too. It is very cool to have a group of marines form a wide variety of chapters.
I have an Avatar: The last Airbender themed dark eldar army. They are based off of the fire nation from the series. The infantry are all dark red and grey, and the raiders, ravagers, and venoms are all a iron looking metallic with flags showing the fire nation symbol.
I have an idea for an Ork Nob based army, where all the Nobs are named after King Arthur Nights. (A group of ten on bikes with a pain boy [Merlin] and some mega armored ones as well). Then they have grot support (peasants) and lootas which are archers. I also want to include some dakka jets which would be viewed as dragons.
My hive fleet is called Megaladon, but doesn’t have a theme as far as units are concerned.
Lastly I have a Pedro Crimson Fists army with mainly scouts and a couple units of sternguard.
That’s very cool! Do you have any pics of the Dark Eldar? And Arthurian, Ork Knights sounds awesome!
