Imperial Armor Apocalypse Second Edition: Necrons Review

This book heralds in a new meta

Necrons this week! Well, Necron I should say, as they only have a single unit.

Imperial Guard review here.

Space Marine review here.

Chaos review here.

So, I am tired, we’ve been crazy busy and the shop is closed, so today, Necrons! They only have one unit in this book, so this will be mercifully quick and I can scoot off to bed!

So what did they get?

Tomb Stalker

This guy packs a serious punch

So, besides a really cool model, what does this guy bring to the table?

He costs 205pts, and has a nice statline.  WS and BS of 4, but str6 and toughness 7 with 5 wounds. He also has a 3+, and initiative 4 as well as 4 attacks.

In typical Necron fashion, he is pretty hard to kill. Beyond 5 tough 7 wounds, he is also more resilient to poision attacks, only every being wounded by them on a 6, regardless of what they would normally wound him on. Ouch. This makes him so much tougher than other MCs. I can hear Dark Eldar Venom Spam players crying from here! My Nids are a bit upset too, to be honest!

He is also very mobile, with fleet, move through cover and hit and run.

Lastly, he gains 2 attacks on the charge as opposed to 1, and has night vision….as well as an obscure refernce to being able to charge without requiring LoS. A hint of things to come in 6th ed, perhaps?

As for shooting, it is incidental at best with two Gauss Flayers (standard Necron Warrior weapon) and I don’t see this guy shooting them very often in favor of fleeting.

Final Verdict: On the whole, a great assault unit for the Crons. He is fast, tough, hits hard and without hesitation I would bring this guy to a big event. With hit and run and all of the other cool abilities he has, this guy is very versatile. I would even consider dropping a unit of Spyders in our Scarab Farm list for one of these.

*Also, Rantimus, a reader of ours from down under, has reported using this beastie in practice and says it is gross how good it is. Thanks for the input, Rantimus!

  1. The Tomb Stalker seems like he would be so much fun to use, I went ahead and picked up one with my Order of Forgeworld books. I wish they had put him in the regular dex, so there would never be any problems playing with it!

    1. We’re trying to pick away at the resistances people have to FW. Hopefully in time we can get people to accept them for normal tournament play. I also hear form reliable sources that they will be made “official” in 6th ed.

  2. Thats true, its a little unfair that tournaments don’t allow you to use 40k approved models in your games, there is no reason for it. They cost a lot, but are awesome and bring a lot more depth to your armies (and throw in something a little different and fun)
I hope some more Tournies bring in the FW models. We will see I guess. The tomb stalker will defiantly be a member on my Necron army lists.

    1. I agree 100%. We’re trying to push forward with FW in tournament play. The BSB, a big tournament here in California allows them, and it is seriously no big deal.

We hope to continue that trend and see people lighten up about it.

  3. My wife and I playtested this thing a while back and man, Toughness 7 is a @$#&% to kill! It’s a nasty creature for sure, and I’m glad to see it become “legal” in normal games. I wonder if competitive Necron lists will field this thing.

  4. Reece,

Are you eyeballing the two Frontline is working on for me?…I am watching you!!…I was to use them as Tri-arch Stalkers…but now…I think as CC beasts is better…I am stoked…My Apoc 2nd edition book is in the mail, until then thanks for the teasers Reece.
